Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is characterized by insulin resistance and β-cell dysfunction. Because patients with T2DM have inadequate β-cell mass (BCM) and β-cell dysfunction worsens glycemic control and makes treatment difficult, therapeutic strategies to preserve and restore BCM are needed. In rodent models, obesity increases BCM about 3-fold, but the increase in BCM in humans is limited. Besides, obesity-induced changes in BCM may show racial differences between East Asians and Caucasians. Recentl...

A germline mutation is identified in almost 40% of pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma (PPGL) syndromes. Genetic testing and counseling are essential for the management of index cases as well as presymptomatic identification and preemptive management of affected family members. Mutations in the genes encoding the mitochondrial enzyme succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) are well described in patients with hereditary PPGL. Among patients of African ancestry, the prevalence, phenotype, germline mutation spect...

Objective null The aim of the study was to examine the effects of the vitamin D (Vit-D) treatment and nontreatment on Vit-D-deficient patients without a prior history of myocardial infarction (MI). null Materials and methods null This was a retrospective, observational, nested case-control study of patients (N = 20 025) with low 25-hydroxyvitamin D ([25-OH]D) levels ( null Results null Among the cohort of 20 025 patients, the risk of MI was significantly lower in Group C than in Group B (hazard ...

Context null High-residual C-peptide in longer-duration type 1 diabetes (T1D) is associated with fewer hypoglycemic events and reduced glycemic variability. Little is known about the impact of C-peptide close to diagnosis. null Objective null Using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) data from a study of newly diagnosed adults with T1D, we aimed to explore if variation in C-peptide close to diagnosis influenced glycemic variability and risk of hypoglycemia. null Methods null We studied newly dia...

Purpose Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome of abnormal phosphate and vitamin D metabolism caused by typically small endocrine tumors that secrete fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). TIO is characterized clinically by progressive musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, proximal muscle weakness, and multiple fractures, leading to long-term disability. Misdiagnosis and delayed diagnosis are common because of the nonspecific symptoms, and several years may elapse before patie...
