Abstract null null Tribofilm formation and frictional performance of lubricant additives — oleamide, ZDDP and their mixture formulated in PAO — on steel and diamond-like carbon (DLC)-coated steel surfaces was studied under severe boundary lubrication conditions. The binary additive system reduced friction to a greater extent compared to the individual additives for all the surfaces. Chemical composition analysis of the tribofilms using surface spectroscopic techniques (ToF-SIMS and EDX) revealed...

Abstract null null The present work aims to produce Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube (MWCNT) and Graphene Nanoplatelets (GNPs) reinforced AlSiCuNiMg alloy matrix composites via stir casting. The wear resistance and tribological performances of produced materials are examined by steel balls in dry sliding conditions under loads of 10 N, 20 N, and 40 N. The composites were produced by the combination of semi powder metallurgy and stir casting techniques and then a solid-solution + aging process was app...

Abstract null null In this paper, a new model is developed to analyze a tilting pad bearing with 5 pads in a load-between-pad configuration in three dimensions. Isothermal Navier-Stokes equations with phase fraction equation for cavitation model are solved for 3D steady state simulation using the OpenFOAM package. Results show that with decrease in eccentricity, the difference between the 3D and 2D simulations increases. This is mainly due to the fluid inertia effects when entering the pads. Alt...

Abstract null null The effect of three different film-forming additives mixed in PAO oil on the elasto-hydrodynamic (EHD) friction was investigated and compared to cases with the base oil only. When the boundary films were formed on the surfaces, the organic friction modifier (OFM) decreased the EHL friction by up to 8.7%, the ionic liquid (IL) decreased it by up to 6.4%, while the polymeric organic friction modifier (pOFM) increased it by up to 4.2%. In contrast, if the boundary films were not ...

Abstract null null Based on the continuity of length scale for asperities, a complete model of normal stiffness between curved fractal surfaces considering friction factor is proposed. Through the coupling of critical base diameter and contact area, deformation modes of all asperities are determined, and contact stiffness of the whole rough surface is derived by double integral. Accordingly, effects of contact load, surface topography, friction factor, size parameters and material properties on ...

Abstract null null Molecular dynamics simulation method was used to study the influence of hydrogen adsorption on the wear process of few-layer graphene. We observed that hydrogen atoms are prone to adsorb on three distinct regions around the wear cavity of graphene, and they have different influence mechanisms on the wear process of graphene. The absorbed hydrogen can promote the breaking of stretched carbon chains, or change the propagation direction of wear cavity and lead to the early failur...

Abstract null null Fretting crevice corrosion has become a major concern in orthopedic medical devices when passivating alloys are used alone or in combination. In this work the fretting crevice corrosion response of 316 L stainless steel was investigated when the counterface consisted of different alloys and the effects of potential and normal load were investigated. Fretting initiated crevice corrosion was observed in all stainless steel containing couples, but not in the Ti6Al4V_CoCrMo combin...

Abstract null null The introduction of functional fillers is very important for enhancing the thermal conductivity and tribological performance of self-lubricating fabric liner composites. In present work, copper yarn was woven into hybrid Nomex/PTFE fabric via an integrated design method to fabricate self-lubricating fabric liner composites. Characterizations using thermal conductivity analyzer and tensile testing machine demonstrated that the copper fiber-reinforced self-lubricating fabric lin...

Abstract null null Tungsten alloy balls are considered as one of the important candidate spallation targets for China initiative Accelerator Driven Subcritical System. The wear of these balls in the spallation target loop greatly affects their service life. In this work, the collective friction and wear of the balls at 250 oC were studied by using our self-developed equipment. The results reveal that the mass loss ratio of balls first rises and then falls, experiencing different stages, and its ...

Abstract null null Vulcanization has an important influence on the performance of rubber seals. Modeling is an effective means of determining the optimal vulcanization process parameters. In the present study, the tribological and mechanical properties of ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) samples with various degrees of vulcanization were analyzed, and a mathematical relationship between the degree of vulcanization and the properties was established. On the basis of the transient thermo-ch...
