Abstract Two modes of failure are analysed for coupling links, the mechanical connections that transmit traction forces between vehicles along the length of a train. Coupling links are designed to withstand the dynamic loads in normal operation but may break if applied loads exceed safe operating limits. Fractography of two failed links revealed that one had failed through brittle fracture, and one through ductile fracture. Metallography indicated that one sample was hardened and tempered with t...

Abstract The diesel engine failed in the bench test due to the cracking of its cylinder head, which is made of aluminum alloy by low pressure sand casting. To investigate the cause of the cylinder head cracks, computed tomography (CT), metallurgical observation and fracture inspection were carried out. Besides, the stress state of the cylinder head was determined by finite element analysis method, and the casting process was simulated to identify the root cause of the cracks. The cracks are obse...

Abstract Aiming at the asymmetrical deformation of the roadway under the influence of geological structure and mining activity, a combination of theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and field test was used to analyze the distribution of deviatoric stress and plastic zone under the condition of different stress. At the same time, the asymmetric deformation mechanism and stability control technology of the rock surrounding the near-fault roadway (NFR) were studied. The research results showe...

Abstract Wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) has increasingly attracted attention in the construction sector because of its ability to produce large metallic structural parts in short times. In this paper, Coffin-Manson and Morrow (CMM) equation is employed to compare the fatigue life of WAAM stainless steel with the structural steels S355 and S690. The results showed that the fatigue performance of structural steel is better than the WAAM stainless steel, the fatigue performance vertical to ...

Abstract Fatigue life prediction of materials under the cyclic loading is still a particularly challenging task remains to be resolved. This study aims to develop a generic framework for fatigue life prediction under the multi-level cyclic (MLC) loading with consideration of the loading sequence effects. Firstly, a conditional probability density function (PDF) model is presented to quantify the fatigue life distributions of materials under any constant amplitude cyclic (CAC) loading. Subsequent...
Abstract The exhaust nozzle, made of titanium, is the part of a jet engine where the final expansion of the hot gas from the turbine occurs and where the speed of the exhaust gas is further increased to create thrust. During the work, it is exposed to elevated temperatures and compressive and hoop stresses, which makes the cracks’ occurrence in the exhaust nozzle’s inner sleeve unavoidable, making repairs during maintenance necessary. In this study, crack growth in the repaired inner sleeve was ...

Abstract To accurately predict the train operation state through the test results of the scaled vehicle-track test platform, based on the similarity theory and vehicle-track coupling dynamics theory, the similarity criterion of vehicle-track coupling dynamics system was proposed, and the dynamics models of vehicle-track system in scaled and full scale were established. The running characteristics of wheels under the critical state of derailment were analyzed, and a dynamic evaluation criterion o...

Abstract Wheel wear is a fundamental problem for railway vehicles. The unequal wear rate of the two wheels of a wheelset results in the wheel diameter difference (WDD). The WDD and wheel wear not only affect the dynamic performances of rail vehicles, but also increase the maintenance cost. This paper presents an investigation of the effect of the WDD on tread wear for freight wagons based on extensive field measurements and numerical simulations. The evolution laws of the WDD and tread wear of 4...

Abstract The corrosion damage of an organic coating system was accelerated by different AC-DC-AC tests in comprison with neutral salt spray (NSS) and natural immersionn. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), laser microscopy, adhesion measurement, and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was employed to reveal the degradation processes of the coating. The results showed that the corrosion damage could be rationally accelerated in th...
