Abstract Thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) are commonly used to fabricate structures for application in repeatable, energy absorption environments. The emergence of additive manufacturing (AM) means scope now exists to design and build complex TPE components that can mechanically outperform traditionally manufactured equivalents. The ability to efficiently characterize these new TPE AM materials is, however, a barrier preventing wider industrial uptake. This study aims to establish a novel pathway ...

Abstract A Round-Robin test using split Hopkinson pressure bars (SHPBs) has been conducted by four universities: Swinburne University of Technology (SUT), Australia; University of Sao Paulo (USP), Brazil; University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa; and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. Each university had different sets of SHPBs and data acquisition systems. The bars were made of maraging 350 (SUT), SAE 1055 (USP), stainless steel 17–4 pH (UCT), and stainless steel 304 (NTU), r...

Due to compressive loads, offshore flexible pipes may exhibit global and local instabilities and as a consequence structural failures. This work presents an experimental investigation concerning the local structural behavior of a real 2.5-inch flexible pipe under compressive load. Three instabilities events were observed in the experimental test: elephant’s foot buckling, birdcaging and wrinkling. Digital image correlation techniques, applied for the first time in this scenario, allowed a clear ...

The Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) test, while widely utilised for high strain rate tests, has yet to be standardised. As an exploratory step towards developing a standard test method or protocol, a Round Robin test series has been conducted between four institutions: (i) Swinburne University of Technology, Australia (ii) University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, (iii) University of Cape Town, South African and (iv) Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Each institution prepared specimens fro...
