Abstract To understand the Twitter network of an environmental and political event and to extend the network theory of social capital, we first performed a network analysis of the English tweets during the first 10 days of the United Nations’ Conference of the Parties in Paris in 2015. Accounts for nonprofit and government agencies were more likely to be influential in the Twitter network and be retweeted, whereas individual accounts were more likely to retweet others. Based on a quota sample of...

In this study, we examine whether and how CFO expertise and previous work experience influence voluntary corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure, using text mining techniques. In particular, we find that firms’ CFOs with accounting accreditation and management-related work experience disclose more CSR issues in their 10-K financial reports. We also find that firms with older and female CFOs as well as CFOs with higher education disclose less CSR information, whereas CFOs hired from outs...

The aim of this study is to introduce an innovative text mining approach to assess firms' risks using unstructured textual disclosure from annual reports. Specifically, we use Natural Language Processing techniques to extract firms' self-identified risks including financial, strategic, operational, and hazard risks based on an enterprise risk management framework. We examine the association between these four risk measures derived from the risk factor section in 10-K filings and audit fees. The ...

Intra-site search engines (ISEs) dedicated to private electronic markets have become popular with the fast-growing electronic markets. Among several research facets regarding the advertising services of ISEs, we focus on how to optimise the ISE-based advertising market mechanism by improving the pricing model. The widely adopted pricing scheme, Flat Fee (FF), fails to differentiate ISE advertising services among subscribers. Such inefficiency results in the loss of the subscribers and the declin...

AbstractOnline reviews have become extremely valuable sources of information about products and their customers as electronic commerce continues to proliferate rapidly. Previous research has shown that reviews of a product change and evolve over its life. Identifying and understanding patterns of change in reviews and the forces that shape them is an underexplored topic with substantial potential for predicting and improving the market performance of products. In this study, we analyze review te...

ABSTRACTThis study aims to identify the structure of online restaurant reviews and examine the influence of review attributes and sentiments on restaurant star ratings. While past research indicated four attributes specific to restaurant reviews—food, service, ambience, and price—this study proposes context as the fifth attribute unique to online reviews. Sentiment analysis of online restaurant reviews has confirmed the proposed underlying structure of online restaurant reviews. Results showed t...

Supply chains are increasingly becoming more complex, making collaboration progressively difficult to establish and maintain. It is imperative to understand not only the consequences, but also the drivers of effective and efficient collaboration. In this study, we attempt to show how varying levels of collaboration impact service level and how cloud computing fosters these levels of collaboration. We introduce a framework detailing how cloud computing impacts three levels of collaboration: (1) i...

Engineering secure software is challenging. Software development organizations leverage a host of processes and tools to enable developers to prevent vulnerabilities in software. Code reviewing is one such approach which has been instrumental in improving the overall quality of a software system. In a typical code review, developers critique a proposed change to uncover potential vulnerabilities. Despite best efforts by developers, some vulnerabilities inevitably slip through the reviews. In thi...

Online user-generated content in various social media websites, such as consumer experiences, user feedback, and product reviews, has increasingly become the primary information source for both consumers and businesses. In this study, we aim to look beyond the quantitative summary and unidimensional interpretation of online user reviews to provide a more comprehensive view of online user-generated content. Moreover, we would like to extend the current literature to the more customer-driven servi...
