Abstract In patients with vascular diseases, heparinization is necessary for surgery. Here, we report the case of a 77-year-old man who presented with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) during the postoperative management of tongue cancer. The patient was already on warfarin owing to arteriosclerosis obliterans, and was perioperatively administered heparin by a cardiologist. The prothrombin time-international normalized ratio (PT-INR) was stabilized, and heparin administration was terminated...

Abstract Chondroid lipoma (CL) in the oral cavity is relatively rare. Here, we report a case of CL arising from the tongue. A 51-year-old man with a painless soft tissue swelling on the left tongue was referred to our department for detailed examination and treatment. As no metastatic lesions were found at other sites, CL was suspected. Subsequently, we performed tumor resection under general anesthesia. Histological findings revealed mature adipocytes and small, round vacuolar cells against the...

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum. Recently, its incidence has been increasing worldwide. We encountered a young woman who presented with induration mimicking squamous cell carcinoma in the lower lip, without major medical conditions. A 25-year-old Japanese woman presented with a 1-month history of a painless induration in her lower lip. Because squamous cell carcinoma was suspected, a preoperation work up was performed, including laboratory t...

We present a case of osteomyelitis of the condyle secondary to bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw. A 77-year-old female was referred to our clinic with complaints of swelling in the left mandibular molar regions. The patient had been suffering from myeloperoxidase anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (MPOANCA) associated vasculitis and had been treated with glucocorticoids for 8 years, and oral bisphosphonates had been prescribed to prevent osteopenia secondary to glucocorticoids. I...

Abstract We report on the findings of the first antimicrobial susceptibility surveillance study in Japan of isolates recovered from odontogenic infections. Of the 38 facilities where patients representing the 4 groups of odontogenic infections were seen, 102 samples were collected from cases of periodontitis (group 1), 6 samples from pericoronitis (group 2), 84 samples from jaw inflammation (group 3) and 54 samples from phlegmon of the jaw bone area (group 4) for a total of 246 samples. The posi...

Even though the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) procedure has been improved, oral mucositis (OM) is still a severe complication of the conditioning regimen. We investigated the association between OM severity and the alteration of oral bacterial flora using 16S rRNA gene-based terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis in 19 consecutive patients undergoing HSCT. Oral samples were collected at pre-transplantation, at the peak of mucositis and post-engraftme...

Abstract Salivary duct carcinoma (SDC) that occurs in the oral cavity in the minor salivary glands is relatively rare. Here, we report a case of SDC arising from the buccal minor salivary glands. An 83-year-old man with a mass in the right buccal mucosa was referred to our department for detailed examination and treatment. As no metastatic lesions were found at other sites, SDC was suspected, and cT4aN0M0: Stage IVa was diagnosed in the right buccal mucosa. Subsequently, we performed tracheostom...

: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is characterized by morphological and functional cellular heterogeneity, which are properties of progenitor cells, as opposed to cell alterations caused by accidental expression of stem cell‑related molecules. The expression levels of stemness molecules and their distribution in HNSCC are unclear. As regards sporadic cellular heterogeneity, methylation is an important factor for transcriptional regulation in tumors. Integrative screening analysis o...
