Abstract null null The deformation mechanisms of a NbTiZr body-centered cubic (BCC) medium-entropy alloy (MEA) are investigated by tensile testing at various temperatures. The yield strength (YS) shows a strong temperature dependence from 77 K to 300 K, while being insensitive to temperatures between 300 K and 873 K, followed by a significant drop at 1073 K. TEM investigations show that the alloy deformation is controlled by screw-dislocation slip. Screw-dislocations with cross-kinks/jogs are fr...

Abstract null null Refractory TaTiNb, TaTiNbZr, and TaTiNbZrX (X = Mo, W) high entropy alloys were synthesized by combined use of high energy ball milling (HEBM) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). Powders of predominantly bcc TaTiNbZrX (X = Mo, W) refractory high entropy alloys (RHEAs) were successfully prepared by short-term HEBM (60 min) and then SPS-consolidated at 1373 K for 10 min. TEM analysis of the TaTiNbZrW HEA powder obtained after 60 min of HEBM revealed its nanocrystalline structure w...

Abstract null null Additive manufacturing (AM) allows printing parts of complex geometries that cannot be produced by standard technologies. Besides, AM provides the possibility to create gradient materials with different structural and physical properties. We, for the first time, printed gradient soft magnetic materials from paramagnetic powders (316L steel and Cu-12Al-2Fe (in wt.%) aluminium bronze)). The magnetic properties can be adjusted during the in-situ printing process. The saturated ma...

Abstract null null In the present study, the response of Ti40Nb30Hf15Al15 and Ti40Nb30Zr20Al10 (at%) refractory high entropy alloys to annealing is reported. The alloys were produced by vacuum arc melting and had a density of 7.07 ± 0.03 g/cm3 and 6.03 ± 0.03 g/cm3, respectively. In the as-cast condition, both alloys had a coarse-grained single B2 phase structure. After cold rolling to 80% thickness reduction and annealing at T = 900 °C for 15 min, a fine-grained structure with a grain size of 4...

Abstract null null The effect of nitrogen on the structure and mechanical behavior of a CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy after rolling and subsequent annealing was examined. The as-cast alloys doped with 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 at% N were cold rolled to 80% thickness reduction. Further annealing in the temperature range of 700–1000 °C for 1 h has resulted in (i) development of recrystallization in the fcc matrix and (ii) precipitation of the M2N type nitrides in the alloys with 1.0 and 2.0 at% N. The rec...

Abstract null null In this study, a new Nb30Mo30Hf20Co20 (at. %) refractory high entropy alloy (RHEA) comprising an intermetallic (Hf, Co)-rich B2 matrix and disordered (Nb, Mo)-rich bcc particles was introduced. The B2 matrix showed relatively high dislocation mobility, which, coupled with its continuity, allowed bridging and blunting of the cracks formed in the hard bcc particles during plastic deformation. The complex deformation behavior of the constitutive phases resulted in extraordinary h...

Abstract null null The effect of cold swaging and subsequent annealing on the structure and mechanical properties of a 321-type metastable austenitic stainless steel was studied. Cold swaging to a strain of 90% produced a gradient structure with a gradual decrease in the α-phase content from the edge to the center of the bar. Globular and lamellar regions of both strain-induced martensite and retained austenite were found in the center, meanwhile, a completely globular austenite–martensite dual-...

Abstract null null Light-weight Al-Ti nanocomposites attract increasing attention due to the advancements in spacecraft and additive manufacturing. In this work, ab initio modeling, DSC, and in-situ XRD experiments were used to formulate a strategy for rapid fabrication of Al-Al3Ti nanocomposites with enhanced mechanical properties (ultimate tensile strength up to 437 MPa at room temperature and up to 109 MPa at 500 °С, ~6% elongation before failure), resulting from a mixed ductile-fragile defor...

Abstract null null Heterostructured high-entropy alloys (HEAs) exhibit a good combination of strength and ductility. However, the deformation mechanisms and related mechanical properties of the heterogeneous nanostructured body-centred cubic (BCC) HEAs remain largely unrevealed. Here, we report the effect of the strain rate on the mechanical properties and microstructural evolution in the heterostructured Al3CoCrCuFeNi HEA with the gradient grain size ranging from 9 nm at the surface to 45 nm in...

Abstract null null This article provides a report on the effect of multiaxial deformation (MAD) on the structure, texture, mechanical characteristics, and corrosion resistance of the Mg-0.8 (wt.)% Ca alloy. MAD was carried out on the alloy in the as-cast and the annealed states in multiple passes, with a stepwise decrease in the deformation temperature from 450 to 250 °C in 50 °C steps. The cumulative true strain at the end of the process was 22.5. In the case of the as-cast alloy, this resulted...
