Abstract In a systematic search for the QCD critical point in nuclear collisions, at the CERN SPS, it was found that intermittency measurements in the freeze-out state of central Si + Si collisions, at the maximum SPS energy, provide us with an indication of sizeable critical fluctuations. Also, rather recently, a weaker effect was traced in preliminary data of the Ar + Sc reaction for 10–20% most central collisions at (approximately) the same energy. However, the uncertainties in the analysis a...

Suprarenal aortic clamping during abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair results in ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) in local (i.e. kidney) and distant (i.e. heart) tissue. To investigate perioperative approaches that mitigate IRI-induced tissue damage, Wistar rats underwent suprarenal aortic clamping either alone or in combination with short cycles of ischemic conditioning before and/or after clamping. Serum analysis revealed significant reduction in key biochemical parameters reflecting decre...

The genome is exposed daily to many deleterious factors. Ubiquitination is a mechanism that regulates several crucial cellular functions, allowing cells to react upon various stimuli in order to preserve their homeostasis. Ubiquitin ligases act as specific regulators and actively participate among others in the DNA damage response (DDR) network. UBE4B is a newly identified member of E3 ubiquitin ligases that appears to be overexpressed in several human neoplasms. The aim of this review is to pro...

The search for experimental signatures of the critical point (CP) of strongly interacting matter [1] is one of the main objectives of the NA61/SHINE experiment at CERN SPS. In the course of the experiment, an energy (beam momentum 13A - 150A GeV/c) and system size (p+p, p+Pb, Be+Be, Ar+Sc, Xe+La) scan is performed. We investigate local proton density fluctuations connected to the critical behavior of the order parameter as a possible signature of the phase transition in the neighborhood of the C...

Based on an effective action for the 3d Ising critical point we construct a Ginzburg-Landau free energy for the proton density to describe the QCD thermodynamics in the critical region. We argue that the relation between finite-size scaling in configuration space and intermittency in momentum space is a valuable tool for the detection of the QCD critical point in ion collisions. We find that the critical region is very narrow along both chemical potential (\mu and temperature (T directions...

Abstract We study the higher moments of the baryon number in the immediate neighbourhood of the QCD critical endpoint within the framework of Ising-QCD thermodynamics of a finite-size critical system (N. G. Antoniou et al., Phys. Rev. D 97, 034015, 2018). We show that the kurtosis, as a function of the freeze-out baryon chemical potential, becoming negative attains a sharp minimum very close to the critical point. We argue that the sharpness of this minimum is due to the narrowness of the critic...

We employ the recently introduced Ising-QCD partition function (N.~G. Antoniou {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. D 97, 034015 (2018)) to explore in detail the behaviour of the moments of the baryon-number, within the critical region around the critical endpoint. Our analysis is based on the relation of finite-size scaling in real space with intermittency in transverse momentum space. It demonstrates in practice the recent observation (N.~G. Antoniou {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. D 97, 034015 (2018)) that comb...

We develop a description of the equation of state of QCD matter with restored chiral symmetry, which is in thermal and chemical equilibrium with the hadronic phase. The hadron gas is described with self-consistent volume corrections. The chiral phase is composed of a group of few quark condensates, each of which corresponds to a family of hadrons with specific quark content. Between the two phases and along the chemical freeze-out curve we apply not only the conservation of quantum numbers, carr...
