The cerebral blood flow is low in primary polycythaemia, and it has been suggested that this is due to the increase in viscosity which accompanies the elevated haematocrit. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed asymptomatic lesions in white matter regions corresponding with the optic radiations in 20 of 28 patients (71%) with clinically isolated optic neuritis. In contrast to the findings with symptomatic lesions, there was no relationship between the latency of the visual evoked potential and the presence of these asymptomatic posterior visual pathway lesions.
