This study aims to evaluate the prevalence, risk factors, and relative risk of gallstones and associated disease in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). Medical records of 311 patients diagnosed with UC between January 2004 and February 2015 were reviewed retrospectively. To assess relative risk, 622 patients matched by age, sex, and body mass index were included as a control group. Gallstones were detected in 8% (25/311) of UC patients and in 3.9% (24/622) of the control group. Prevalence was...

The aims of this study were to review the clinicopathological characteristics of diminutive (≤ 5 mm) and small polyps (> 5 mm but 65 years), a male gender, and a polyp size of > 5 mm were risk factors of advanced adenoma. The incidence of advanced adenoma in polyps of 65 years are independent risk factors of advanced adenoma.

Advanced age is a known risk factor of poor outcomes for colitis, including Clostridium difficile infection (CDI). The present study compares the clinical outcomes of young and old patients hospitalized for CDI.The clinical records of patients admitted from January 2007 to December 2013 with a diagnosis of CDI were analyzed. Patient baseline characteristics, clinical courses, and outcomes were compared with respect to age using a cut-off 65 years.Of the 241,391 inpatients registered during the s...

Background: Bile acid has been suggested as carcinogen and studies have reported relationship between cholecystectomy and gastrointestinal (GI) cancer. Aim of our study was to evaluate incidence of gastrointestinal cancer in patients who underwent cholecystectomy compared with general population. Methods: Patients who underwent cholecystectomy from Oct 1999 to Dec 2011 were included and patients diagnosed with GI cancer prior to cholecystectomy or within a one year of cholecystectomy were exclud...

Gastric lipoma is a typical benign submucosal tumor that is usually asymptomatic and is generally detected incidentally when performing gastroscopy. However, depending on its size and location, an atypical gastrointestinal lipoma can cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, intestinal obstruction, intussuception and life-threatening gastrointestinal bleeding. We report herein a case of gastric lipoma with bleeding in a 43-year-old man. The gastroscopy showed a 4×4 cm ulcero-fungating submuc...

Collapsing glomerulopathy (CG) has become an important cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). First delineated from other proteinuric glomerular lesions in the 1980s, CG is now recognized as a common, distinct pattern of proliferative parenchymal injury that portends a rapid loss of renal function and poor responses to empirical therapy. The first cases in the literature trace back to human-immunodeficiency-virus (HIV)-negative patients who underwent biopsy in 1979. A 45-year-old male patient ...
