Abstract This paper devotes to investigating fracture mechanism of titanium sheet self-piercing riveted joint. Static fracture, fatigue fracture mechanism and fretting behavior of the joints were systematically studied by a Scanning Electron Microscope. The distribution of fretting debris on a rivet surface was tested by an Energy Dispersive X-ray Detector. Abstract This paper reports on studies of the fretting behavior of self-piercing riveted (SPR) joints in titanium sheet materials. Experiments were performed on SPR titanium joints to help understand the influences of sheet thickness and fatigue load level on the fatigue strength and failure mode of the joints. The fatigue performances of self-piercing riveting (SPR) joints connecting similar and dissimilar sheets of TA1 titanium alloy (TA1), Al5052 aluminium alloy (Al5052) and H62 copper alloy (H62) were studied in this paper. Adopting experimental method to examine clinching is able to apply to the joining of similar and dissimilar titanium alloy in this study. Joining process and mechanical properties of clinched joints in Al5052 aluminum alloy sheets had been studied in this study. The clinched joints were classified to round one and rectangle one.
