In this study, we tested 15 naturally occurring isoflavones and their metabolites for their possible antibacterial properties against nine Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. A brief survey of the naturally occurring astringent compounds aims to show the importance of this group of renewable materials to contribute to the knowledge of the biodiversity of secondary metabolites that can be utilized among others, in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry. The beauty and biodiversity of this group of mostly secondary metabolites are illustrated. The article is also aimed as teaching tool for teachers and students.
