The process-structure-property relationships of copper laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF)-produced parts made of high purity copper powder (99.9 wt %) are examined in this work. A nominal laser beam diameter of 100 μm with a continuous wavelength of 1080 nm was employed. A wide range of process parameters was considered in this study, including five levels of laser power in the range of 200 to 370 W, nine levels of scanning speed from 200 to 700 mm/s, six levels of hatch spacing from 50 to 150 μm, ...

Abstract Owing to their exceptional physical, mechanical, and technological properties, ductile cast irons have been increasingly used, especially in automotive industries. Alloying elements and heat treatment routes can increase the strength of ductile irons. In this work, the effects of austempering temperature and time on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a ductile cast iron modified by 0.35% Nb have been studied. Two austempering temperatures of 320 oC and 360 oC for a holding ...

Abstract Porosity grading of metallic lattice structures is becoming a favorable design for bone implant applications since these structures mimic the bone mechanical and biological properties. Especially when using bio-mimetic unit cell designs created by triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS), such as gyroids, making these types of lattice structures dominant over other CAD-based designs. In this study, the manufacturability of gyroids is tested by studying three different designs: uniform po...

Abstract Due to its vast benefits, Additive Manufacturing (AM) has attracted a great deal of attention during the last two decades. Selective Laser Melting (SLM) is one of the most increasingly used AM techniques in the world. The machinability of SLM-manufactured Ti6Al4V parts in as-built (SLM-AB) and stress-relief (SLM-SR) conditions was studied in this work via toroidal milling. A conventional processed Ti6Al4V alloy was tested as a reference. SLM process parameters for producing near fully d...

Abstract Although selective laser melting technology (SLM) provides significant advantages over conventional manufacturing processes, it is still a relatively expensive and slow manufacturing method for high-volume production. Increasing the manufacturing speed by optimizing process parameters may increase the porosity of manufactured parts, thus degrading their mechanical properties. Here, in experimental Phase 1 of the paper, the effect of adjusting the process parameters on the microstructure...

Due to a good combination of high hardness, wear resistance, toughness, resistance to high operating temperatures, and fairly low material cost, AISI H13 tool steel is commonly used in the manufacture of injection molds. Additive manufacturing (AM) such as selective laser melting (SLM), due to the layer-wise nature of the process, offers substantial geometric design freedom in comparison with conventional subtractive manufacturing methods, thereby enabling a construction of complex near-net shap...

Abstract This paper focuses on the precipitates found in the 300 grade maraging steel built by Selective Laser Melting (SLM), which is globally one of the fastest-growing Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology. The test samples were built layer by layer via full melting and rapid solidification of the deposited powder bed of 300 grade maraging steel, using an M2 Concept Laser machine. The samples were aged at 510 °C for 2 h, and then air-cooled. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, ...
