ABSTRACT The global emergency caused by COVID-19 makes the discovery of drugs capable of inhibiting SARS-CoV-2 a priority, to reduce the mortality and morbidity of this disease. Repurposing approved drugs can provide therapeutic alternatives that promise rapid and ample coverage because they have a documented safety record, as well as infrastructure for large-scale production. The main protease of SARS-CoV-2 (Mpro) is an excellent therapeutic target because it is critical for viral replication; ...

Abstract The synthesis of the poly(ester-urethanes) using poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) has gained increasing interest as scaffolds for use in tissue engineering despite their moderate hydrophobicity and biocompatibility. However, it is not yet known if the grafting of poly(N‐hydroxyethyl acrylamide) is suitable to improve the degree of hydrophilicity of the surface. This study aims to tailor the surface of these biopolymers by plasma-induced graft polymerization of N‐hydroxyethyl acrylamide. The synt...

Introduction. Biological adhesives and effective topical therapeutic agents that improve wound healing are urgently required for the treatment of chronic ulcers. A biodegradable adhesive based on a carbohydrate polymer with zinc oxide (CPZO) was shown to possess anti-inflammatory activity and enhance wound healing, but its bactericidal activity was unknown. Aim. To investigate the bactericidal activity of CPZO against bacteria commonly present as infectious agents in chronic wounds. Methodology....

The water kefir grains are a multi-species starter culture used to produce fermented beverages of sucrose solution with or without fruit extracts. The water kefir grains are known in Mexico as Tibicos, which are mainly used to produce Tepache, a traditional Mexican drink made by fermenting pineapple peel. The microbiota of Tibicos mainly include lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and since most probiotics belong to this group, Tibicos may represent a potential source of probiotic bacteria. Moreover, sev...

Abstract Purpose To report the characterization and analysis of the biofilm formation in mixed keratitis induced by the coinfection of Staphylococcus aureus and Fusarium falciforme in a novel murine model. Methods Clinical ocular microbial isolates and female BALB/c mice were used to develop the murine model. Immunosuppression was achieved with cyclophosphamide and methylprednisolone. A corneoscleral lesion was performed with a micro-pocket technique. Mice received an inoculum with a concentrati...

Abstract Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection affects an estimated 71 million people worldwide. HCV is classified into eight genotypes and >70 subtypes. Determination of HCV genotype is important for selection of type and duration of antiviral therapy, and genotype is also a predictor of treatment response. The most commonly used HCV genotyping method in clinical laboratories is a hybridization-based line probe assay (LiPA; Versant HCV Genotype 2.0). However, these methods have a lack of specificit...

Artisanal fermented beverages have been associated with beneficial effects for a long time. In Mexico, there are a wide variety of artisanal fermented beverages such as Tepache, where the fermentation is initiated by the addition of grains of a polysaccharide-containing biofilm matrix formed by a symbiotic association of bacteria and yeasts known as “Tibicos.” These microorganisms can be responsible for the beneficial effect associated with fermented beverages inoculated with Tibicos. The probio...

Purpose: Mycoplasma pneumoniae is an important cause of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Information on the prevalence of M. pneumoniae in pediatric patients with CAP in Mexico is limited. The aim of this study was to detect M. pneumoniae in hospitalized pediatric patients with CAP. Patients and methods: We performed a descriptive study in a tertiary-level pediatric reference center, obtaining 154 respiratory samples from patients under 18 years of age and diagnosed with CAP. M. pneumoniae wa...

Abstract Retroviral pseudotypes are broadly used as safe instruments to mimic the structure and surface of highly pathogenic viruses. They have been employed for the discovery of new drugs, as diagnostic tools in vaccine studies, and part of serological assays. Because of their widespread use in research and their potential as tools for quality control, it is important to know their shelf life, stability, and best storage conditions. In this study, we produced pseudotypes carrying the lacZ repor...

The effects of habanero pepper extract on Staphylococcus aureus, Lactobacillus casei Shirota and Leuconostoc citreum were studied. The extract contained 8.71 mg/g of capsaicin and 4.72 mg/g of dihydrocapsaicin as well as minor concentrations of gallic, chlorogenic, caffeic, p-coumaric acids and quercetin, determined by HPLC. Inhibition of S. aureus at 4 h was observed with a death rate of -1.53 h-1. While, L. casei Shirota showed a survival of 4.15x105 CFU/mL and L. citreum of 2.20x105 CFU/mL. W...
