104 Background: Care coordination among oncology and primary care physicians (PCPs) is an essential element of survivorship care. Providers at an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center noted gaps in coordinating care with PCPs. We sought to develop a program that enhances communication and education between provider groups to ensure a seamless continuum of care thereby improving overall survivorship care. Methods: The Fox Chase Cancer Center (FCCC) Care Connect program was created to compreh...

Objective: To investigate the effects of GW1929, a new specific PPARgamma agonist, on head and neck squamous carcinoma cell proliferation, apoptosis, and invasion.Method: Human well-differentiated tongue SCC15 cells were treated with 5, 10, 20 micromolar GW1929, and 1% DMSO in 2% FBS Media (control). Tetrazolilum salt WST-1 assay was used to assess proliferation. Cell cycle was analyzed with FACS. Caspase3 was measured with Caspase-Glo3/7 luminescent. RT-PCR measured metalloproteinase-9 and tiss...

Background: Ovarian cancer is the most common cause of cancer related death from gynecologic tumors in the United States. The insidious nature of the disease precludes early diagnosis, therefore surgical debulking and chemotherapy are considered as standard treatment modalities for advanced stages. We investigated the effect of the LXR agonist, T0901317, on ovarian cancer cell proliferation and apoptosis as a potential therapeutic agent. Results: T0901317 treatment resulted in a significant (P <...

ABSTRACT In macrophages, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) has been shown to be important for differentiation, and it serves as a negative regulator of activation. Major trauma/injury causes a dramatic host response that disrupts cellular immune homeostasis and initiates an inflammatory cascade that predisposes the injured host to subsequent infections. In prior studies using a murine trauma model consisting of femur fracture and hemorrhage, splenic macrophages from traumatize...

The effect of dietary fiber supplementation on whole gut transit time in the absence of an intact large bowel is not known. To address this question, 39 patients who had undergone a total colectomy and ileorectal anastamosis for familial polyposis were studied. Treatment arms in a controlled chemoprevention trial consisted of a placebo low-fiber supplement (2 g fiber/day) with or without vitamins or a high-fiber bran supplement (22 g fiber/day) with vitamins. Whole gut transit time was measured ...
