The aviation industry needs renewable and fungible jet fuel—commonly referred to as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)—to minimize emissions and increase efficiencies. Flight represents ∼10% of transportation greenhouse gas emissions, with the global consumption fossil jet fuel over 900 million tons of CO2 equivalent. This future energy perspective highlights the technical opportunities and challenges for realizing the goal of “net-zero-carbon SAF,” with a focus on biogenic feedstocks.
