BACKGROUND Bismuth tungstate (Bi 2 WO 6 ) has attractive photocatalytic performance in the degradation of organic compounds under visible light. The preparation conditions have an important influence on its properties. In this research, the effect of synthetic factors on the structure and photocatalytic activity of Bi 2 WO 6 was investigated based on an orthogonal experimental design using a hydrothermal method. RESULTS It was found that the effect of pH value was greater than that of temperature and time. A three‐dimensional spherical Bi 2 WO 6 superstructure was hydrothermally synthesized using a pH of 0.36 and temperature of 200 °C for 20 h. It was found to have the best photocatalytic activity, with 98% degradation efficiency of rhodamine B in 30 min under visible light irradiation. CONCLUSIONS The orthogonal design for optimal synthesis of Bi 2 WO 6 with hierarchical microsphere architecture promotes a positive balance between superstructure and high photocatalytic degradation performance. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).
