In 1985, Martin Staniland posed in his book the question of ‘What is political economy?’ His response was essentially to pose a series of supplementary questions that spread his quizzical net ever wider, drawing on a range of conventional answers. By contrast, Goodhart and Pradhan pose their own series of supplementary questions starting from and extending an ingenious range of other people’s recent articles. The basic question is spelt out in the book’s subtitle—will recent economic trends undergo a ‘great reversal’ in the near future? The opening chapter covers a summary history of the world economy over the last 30 years, the driving force of which was the expanded labour force in China and other parts of East Asia.
