Abstract
The study of the influence of temperature on granite's physical and mechanical properties is significant to deep geotechnical engineering such as nuclear waste disposal engineering. The granite samples were taken from Beishan of Gansu Province, China, a candidate site for a high-level radioactive waste repository. In this paper, thermal damage on Beishan granite under different temperature (25 °C, 200 °C, 300 °C, 400 °C, and 500 °C) was studied to investigate the thermal effect on physical and mechanical properties. Uniaxial compression tests, ultrasonic velocity, acoustic emission (AE) monitorization and scanning electron microscope were adopted. The results showed that: (1) a temperature threshold of 300 °C was recognized, with the increasing temperature, the peak strength, P-wave velocity, and mass loss ratio of the granite decreased sharply. (2) combining with the scanning electron microscope results, the changes in the growth of thermal cracks due to the heating of granite at different elevated temperatures indicated the cracks in the rock increased and gradually formed a fractures zone eventually leading to rock failure. (3) The granite sample was a brittle splitting failure when the temperature was below 200 °C, the failure of granite sample presented shear failure once the temperature exceeded 200 °C (4) The accumulated AE counts increased when the stress reached $\sigma_{ci} (crack initiation stress) and increased significantly when the stress reached \sigma_{cd} (crack damage stress). The higher the temperature was, the more seriously the granite samples were damaged.

Recent infrastructure development in China and other developing countries has attracted global attention. As a control project of traffic engineering, tunnels also have rapidly increased. However, fire accidents induced by traffic accident or gas explosion frequently occur in tunnels, causing irreversible damage to the tunnel rocks. Moreover, the corrosive effects of acid rain or polluted groundwater have a long-term effect on the tunnel and surrounding rocks. In this paper, physical and thermop...

Most coal mines in China are opting for deep mining due to the rapid reduction of shallow coal reserves, which increases the risk of water-inrush accidents. Given the limitation of water-inrush coefficient method in evaluating the risk of water inrush from the coal seam floor, we analyzed the permeability resistance of the floor under different lithology combinations, and structural conditions of the lower group coal in Yanzhou mining area, based on the in situ pressure permeability test data. Abstract This paper establishes an analytical model to study the influence mechanism of hydraulic fracturing around vertical wellbores under the unsteady seepage in hydrocarbon reservoirs, deduces the analytical solution of water pressure and hydraulic gradient of the model, and compares the law of water pressure and hydraulic gradient changing with time with the results of numerical simulation. The results confirm the accuracy of these analytical solutions. The variation laws of water pressure ...

Abstract A small-scale mock-up test was carried out on a fractured hollow granite cylinder with compacted MX80 bentonite inside, to study the interaction between engineered barrier (compacted bentonite) and natural barrier (host rock with the presence of rock fracture). The swelling pressure and relative humidity of bentonite were monitored with respect to the position of the rock fracture during 349 days of infiltration. Herein, the variation of water content, dry density, suction and microstru...

Deep coal mining in the Yanzhou coalfield is threatened by a confined Ordovician limestone aquifer where water pressure exceeds 10 MPa. High-pressure injection tests are widely used to characterize the hydraulic properties of water-resisting fractured rock strata under such conditions, although estimating hydraulic conductivity remains an issue. This paper presents an approach to estimate it, using data from several high-pressure injection tests by accounting for the flow conditions. Typical P–Q...

Abstract Beishan area is now considered as a potential site of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) repository. In order to understand the mechanical behavior of Beishan granite, conventional triaxial compression (CTC) and hydro-mechanical (HM) coupling tests are conducted on Beishan granite. An acoustic emission (AE) monitoring system is employed to estimate the rock damage evolution during the tests. The testing results show that the compressibility of the rock specimens increases and expansibil...

Abstract The main objective of this study is to analyze the thermo-physical properties of the potential host rock (golden, red, white and black Jalore granitoid) for the construction of a nuclear waste repository in India. The thermal properties of Jalore granitic rocks were determined using the transient plane source (TPS) technique in the temperature range from 25 °C to 250 °C. The dilatometric tests for thermal expansion and the thermal strain were carried out. The results indicate that the t...

Based on the continuum damage mechanics, the damage variable of wave velocity is defined, and the piecewise curve damage evolution of rock material constitutive model is constructed. Using uniaxial compression experiments, using ultrasound on the wave velocity in the process of compression test, the relationship between strain and velocity is obtained, and then the experimental parameters of constitutive model were analyzed. Analysis shows that: All specimens had similar damage variable strain c...

The mechanical properties of rock deteriorate at high temperatures, affecting the stability of the rock. Therefore, it is of great importance to predict the failure of rock at high temperatures. Through the uniaxial compression test, the acoustic emission (AE) characteristics of limestone during loading after being submitted to different heat treatment temperatures were studied, and the variation of the limestone b-value with temperature was discussed. The results show that the characteristics o...
