Neuromorphic electronics are emerging to overcome challenges such as high energy consumption (E) and bulky structure that von Neumann architecture faces. Organic artificial synapses that consume energy at a level comparable with that of biological synapses show great promise for use in future low-energy neuromorphic devices. This Perspective discusses the trends of E of organic artificial synapses and how they are affected by the structure, materials, and operation mechanism. We also present strategies to decrease E of organic neuromorphic devices.
