Ras is a membrane-bound protein that possesses inherent GTPase (guanosine triphosphatases) activity and is expressed in all humans [1]. When activated, it can “switch on” downstream pathways, which ultimately turn on genes that are involved in various physiological processes, including cell growth, differentiation, and survival. It was initially identified in the 1960s by Harvey and Kirsten as a retroviral oncogene when sarcomas were induced in rodents from a murine leukemogenic virus preparation; hence it’s named- Kirsten rat sarcoma 2 viral oncogene homolog [2,3].
