Abstract Because of their many advantages, adhesively bonded joints are intensively used in many engineering fields. So, the mechanical research of the adhesively bonded joints is very important to use these joints safely. There are many studies performed by researchers to investigate the mechanical properties of the adhesive joints. There has been a considerable interest in nanoparticles added to structural adhesives recently because nanoparticles improve the mechanical properties of adhesives ...

Abstract In this study, the fracture behavior of nanocomposite adhesives produced by adding nanostructure in to the adhesives were investigated using Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) test under ambient temperature and thermal cycle conditions. Adhesively bonded DCB joints were produced using DP460 toughened adhesive type and DP125 flexible adhesive type as the adhesives; AA2024-T3 aluminum alloy was used as the adherend, and 1 wt.% Graphene-COOH, Carbon Nanotube-COOH and Fullerene C60 were used as t...

Abstract The present study aimed at exploring the effect of the addition of the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as a reinforcement element on the fatigue behavior of adhesively bonded lap joints. Hence, two sets of specimens were produced with neat adhesive and adhesive-RGO composites and fatigue tests were conducted. Comparing the results showed that an impressive fatigue life enhancement of 130% occurred in high cycle fatigue range of the reinforced joints. Moreover, morphology study on the fract...

Abstract The average shear strength and elongation at failure of adhesively bonded single lap joints (SLJs) were studied when different mixtures of two nanoparticles i.e. silica nanoparticles (SNPs) and multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were added to the adhesive. The experimental results showed that adding the mixed nanoparticles had a significant effect on the mechanical behavior of SLJs. The highest improvements in the shear strength and elongation at failure among different weight perce...

Abstract Modal analysis comprises of determination of natural frequency, mode shapes and damping factor of dynamic structures. It is essential in analyzing the response of a structure in real-life situations to avoid resonance condition under excitation. Now a days, composites with natural fiber/particle materials are in considerable demand for structural applications as an alternative material to conventional synthetic fiber composites. However, adequate amount of work on modal analysis of thes...

Vibrational damping behaviors of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) reinforced natural rubber/ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (NR/EPDM) were investigated. The nanocomposites were prepared through melt compounding using a Haake internal mixer. In this study, GNPs reinforced NR/EPDM nanocomposites were characterized for damping properties towards the effect of GNPs loading (1, 3 and 5 wt%) and chitosan-functionalization. The results indicate the addition of GNPs have significantly improved both log dec...

This paper studied the effect of graphene oxide nano-platelets (GOPs) on the fracture behaviour of epoxy adhesive-bonded joints, experimentally and numerically. The double cantilever beam specimens were tested and the fracture energies and resistance curves were determined for the unreinforced and reinforced adhesives. A maximum improvement of 69% in the fracture energy was achieved with the addition of 0.3 wt% of GOPs into the adhesive layer. Moreover, the fracture surfaces were examined using ...

AbstractThe contribution of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) for enhancing the fracture toughness of a commonly used room-cured epoxy, used to bond E-glass/epoxy composite adherends, is evaluated. A comprehensive experimental investigation is conducted to examine the performance and degradation of adhesively bonded joints subject to cyclic thermal loading using the standard double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens. Several groups of DCB specimens were fabricated using the adhesive reinforced with fou...
