Abstract
Abstract In order to further improve its photocatalytic activity, the BiOI microspheres were activated by a synchronous coupling of Bi metal and graphene under solvothermal conditions. The effects of the synthesis temperature (160–200 °C) on crystallinity, morphology, and photocatalytic activity were studied in particular. As expected, the ternary Bi-BiOI/graphene photocatalyst synthesized at 180 °C exhibited higher photocatalytic activity for NO oxidation removal under visible light irradiation than individual BiOI, and binary Bi-BiOI and BiOI/graphene composites. The photocatalytic efficiency for the NO removal of the ternary Bi-BiOI/graphene photocatalyst synthesized at 180 °C reached 51.8% within 30 min of visible light irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the ternary Bi-BiOI/graphene photocatalyst is attributed to (I) the efficient transfer of photo-generated electrons from BiOI and Bi to graphene, leading to the effective separation of the photo-generated electron-hole pairs and (II) the surface plasmon resonance effect of Bi nanoparticles in the composite photocatalyst. Furthermore, the results of the scavenger experiments and DMPO-ESR spin-trapping measurements reveal that O2− radical species play the most critical role and holes serve as a secondary active species in the oxidative removal process of NO by 180BOI/GR composite under visible light irradiation.

Abstract NO removal is one of the most important issues in dealing with air pollution. In this report, Z-scheme (BiO)2CO3-BiO2-x-graphene (BOC-BiO2-x-GR) composite photocatalyst was designed for NO removal under simulated solar light irradiation. Characterizations of physical properties of the ternary composites revealed extended light absorption and high efficient electron-hole separation. Through the optimization of the BiO2-x content, we observed that the BOC-BiO2-x(35wt%)-GR composite exhibi...

Abstract Constructing direct Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts is a highly efficient pathway to completely utilize the high redox ability of photogenerated charge carriers. Herein, a direct Z-scheme porous g-C3N4 (Pg-C3N4)/BiOI heterojunction was constructed through the in-situ growth of BiOI on the surface of Pg-C3N4. First principle density functional theory calculations indicated that charge transfer would occur from Pg-C3N4 to BiOI due to the difference in their Fermi energies, resultin...

Abstract Although bismuth subcarbonate (Bi2O2CO3), a member of the Aurivillius-phase oxide family, is a promising photocatalyst for the removal of gaseous NO at parts-per-billion level, the large band gap of this material restricts its applications to the UV light region. The above problem can be mitigated by heterojunction fabrication, which not only broadens the light absorbance range, but also inhibits the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers. Herein, we implement this strategy to ...

Abstract Selectively exposing different facets of the photocatalysts to enhance the photocatalytic activity is a promising method. However, the role of exposed specific facets in a photocatalytic process is not fully understood. In order to clarify this mechanism, we have systemically explored the relationships between selectively exposed facets and photocatalytic activity of the nanoplate bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI). The BiOI was synthesized by pH-induced transformation method, and the photocataly...

Abstract The conventional heterogeneous Fenton reaction is often confined by the lower regeneration of Fe2+, which then inhibits the decomposition of H2O2 and the generation of OH. Here we propose a novel idea to significantly accelerate the redox cycling of Fe2+/Fe3+ in heterogeneous Fenton reaction by introducing photo-generated electrons from plasmonic particles. Towards this aim, novel plasmonic Ag/AgCl nanoparticles coated ferrihydrite (Ag/AgCl/Fh) have been synthesized. Compared with pure ...

Abstract Development of biocompatible photocatalysts with improved charge separation and high selectivity is essential for effective removal of air pollutants. Iron-containing catalysts have attracted extensive attention due to their low-toxicity and high natural abundance. Here, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) modified FeOOH nanocomposites fabricated using a facile hydrothermal route showed enhanced NO removal efficiency (22%) compared to pure FeOOH. Moreover, generation of toxic NO2 intermediates w...
