Cerclage refers to a bag suture and was designed as a method to keep the cervix closed, thus preventing prematurity during pregnancy. This technique is adopted in several medical specialties. The objective of this work was to report a case where cerclage was indicated owing to systemic conditions against surgical removal. The patient was a 63-year-old black man with a clinically extensive node in the buccal mucosa, pediculated, painless, measuring 50 mm, pinkish, smooth and bright surfaced, suggestive of fibrous hyperplasia or fibroma. The patient had controlled diabetes, but severe (decompensated) hypertension and surgery phobia. Based on these facts, the technique of cerclage was indicated; the patient was oriented to return for follow-up. During 1 of these consultations, it was observed that the lesion was highlighted when placed in formalin for microscopic study, which confirmed the diagnosis of inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia.
