A shear zone machining theory is used in reverse to obtain flow stress properties for a 1022 plain Carbon steel and an X4150 high alloy free machining steel. A comparison of these results is made with some high speed compression data and a near static compression test. The comparison indicates that there is a difference in the techniques used with higher flow stress properties resulting from the machining theory and tests due to higher strain rates.
