The Pd(OAc)2/O2/DMSO catalyst system displays impressive versatility in the aerobic oxidation of organic substrates, ranging from alcohols to olefins. This report details mechanistic insights into these reactions. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) plays no redox role in the chemistry, and kinetic experiments identify the turnover-limiting step as DMSO-promoted oxidation of palladium(0) by molecular oxygen. The “chemical oxidase” pathway characterized for this catalyst system holds great promise for the ...

A heterogenized Pd catalyst, Pd(II)−hydrotalcite (palladium(II) acetate−pyridine complex supported by hydrotalcite) catalyzes the aerobic oxidation in toluene of a variety of primary and secondary alcohols into the corresponding aldehydes and ketones in high yields using atmospheric pressure of air as a sole oxidant under mild conditions. This catalyst is also effective for the oxidation of allylic alcohols, especially such as geraniol and nerol, without any isomerization of an alkenic part. The...

The oxidation of secondary alcohols is one of the most common and well-studied reactions in chemistry. Although excellent catalytic enantioselective methods exist for a variety of oxidation processes, such as epoxidation, dihydroxylation, and aziridination, it is surprising that there are relatively few catalytic enantioselective examples of the ubiquitous alcohol oxidation. In connection with a general program dealing with the discovery of new catalytic oxidation systems, we present herein the ...

Alcohol oxidations are typically performed with stoichiometric reagents that generate heavy-metal waste and are usually run in chlorinated solvents. A water-soluble palladium(II) bathophenanthroline complex is a stable recyclable catalyst for the selective aerobic oxidation of a wide range of alcohols to aldehydes, ketones, and carboxylic acids in a biphasic water-alcohol system. The use of water as a solvent and air as the oxidant makes the reaction interesting from both an economic and environ...

A novel combination of Pd(OAc)2/pyridine/MS3A catalyzes the aerobic oxidation in toluene of a variety of primary and secondary alcohols into the corresponding aldehydes and ketones in high yields. Various substituents and protecting groups are compatible with this oxidation. The ca. 2:3 ratio of O2 uptake to product yield is observed, whereas in the absence of MS3A, the ratio is ca. 1:1, suggesting the in situ formation of H2O2 and its decomposition by MS3A into water and oxygen. A catalytic cyc...

A novel combination of Pd(OAc)2/pyridine/MS3A catalyzes the aerobic oxidation of various benzylic alcohols into corresponding aldehydes and ketones in good yield. Primary and secondary aliphatic alcohols also are smoothly oxidized to aldehydes and ketones, respectively, under the same conditions.

Abstract A giant Pd cluster, Pd 561 phen 60 (OAc) 180 , has high catalytic activity for the selective oxidations of various primary allylic alcohols to the corresponding α,β-unsaturated aldehydes in the presence of molecular oxygen under mild reaction conditions. A Pd cluster anchored on TiO 2 also catalyzes the above oxidations; the heterogeneous Pd 561 cluster catalyst is easily separated from the reaction mixture and is reusable.

A practical and eco-friendly strategy for the radical-mediated decarboxylative [3 + 2] and [4 + 2] annulation of enynals and γ,σ-unsaturated N-(acyloxy)phthalimides through the photoactivation of an electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex has been developed. A wide range of primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHP) esters can be used as suitable substrates for the synthesis of fused ketones without any transition-metal catalysts or oxidants. This protocol features a broad s...

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) modified Co3O4 was prepared by impregnation and pyrolysis. The obtained g-C3N4/Co3O4 was thoroughly characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, TG and N2 adsorption. Its catalytic performance was investigated in the aerobic oxidation of benzyl alcohol in liquid phase. High activity as well as excellent selectivity to benzaldehyde can be obtained at mild condition (at atmospheric pressure and temperature of 80 °C). H2-TPR and XPS results show that the excellent activit...

Azo-disubstituted derivatives with electron-withdrawing groups, such as acyl, alkoxycarbonyl and nitrile, are widely used as reagents in organic synthesis. Dialkyl azodicarboxylates are the most readily available reagents among them. This review summarizes the utility of dialkyl azodicarboxylates as versatile reagents and essential building blocks for the synthesis of complex molecules. Applications of dialkyl azodicarboxylates in the Mitsunobu reaction, as oxidants in the oxidation of aldehydes...

An aerobic oxidation reaction of alcohols toward aldehydes or ketones using catalytic amounts of Fe(NO3)3·9H2O, 4-OH-TEMPO, and NaCl has been developed. Compared with the former catalytic system with TEMPO developed in this group, the new protocol using 4-OH-TEMPO, which is much cheaper on an industrial scale, accomplished the transformation with a higher selectivity, especially for aliphatic alcohols toward aldehydes. α,β-Unsaturated alkynals or alkynones can be efficiently synthesized from pro...
