1. The presence of hemoglobin-binding proteins, or haptoglobins, was noted in four species of North American Catostomid fishes: Catostomus insignis, C. latipinnis, Pantosteus clarki and P. plebeius. 2. These haptoglobins exhibit variation in electrophoretic pattern which was found to be a function of the concentration of free hemoglobin in the serum prior to electrophoresis. 3. Variation is attributd to the existence of more than one hemoglobin-binding site on the haptoglobin molecule.

Serum haptoglobins in some North American catostomid fishes
