Seven unrelated families with hyperparathyroidism have been seen at our institution in the past ten years. The purpose of this paper is to review the pattern of inheritance in the fifty-three affected members of these seven families and the microscopic findings in the parathyroid tissue removed from twenty-three of them. Other endocrine involvement in three members of three different families suggests that hereditary hyperparathyroidism is most likely a part of the syndrome known as hereditary endocrine adenomatosis.
