OBJECTIVE Cytological diagnosis of pancreatic specimens obtained by endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) is often challenging because of the small sample size or well-differentiated adenocarcinoma with weak cytological atypia. Therefore, the sensitivity and specificity of cytological diagnosis for pancreatic cancer should be improved. Hence, we aimed to clarify the utility of cytological scoring to distinguish malignant from benign lesions for cytological diagnosis of pa...

Ewing sarcoma (ES) is the second most common bone malignancy in young patients, with 80% occurring in the first two decades of life. In contrast, extraskeletal ES accounts for approximately 12% of cases and is more common in older patients.[1] The clinical behaviour is aggressive, with a 5-year survival of 70-80% for localized disease, less than 30% for metastatic or early-relapsing disease, and possibly a worse prognosis in adults compared to children.[1,2] ES is defined by FET-ETS family gene ...

OBJECTIVE To assess the utility of a newly developed squash cytology (SC)-based scoring system for accurate intraoperative diagnosis of schwannoma. METHODS We first compared SC-based and frozen section (FS) diagnoses with final pathological diagnoses of schwannoma (16 cases), meningioma (39 cases) and low-grade astrocytoma (16 cases). Then, by logistic regression modeling, we identified features of SC preparations that were independently predictive of schwannoma. To develop a diagnostic scoring ...

Background null Cholangiocarcinoma is a relatively rare form of adenocarcinoma which may resemble adenocarcinoma of pancreatobiliary origin or adenocarcinomas from many other sites in the body. As a result, its distinction relies mainly on clinical history and morphology. null Case null A 64-year-old male with cirrhosis and worsening liver failure underwent fine needle aspiration of a radiologically detected liver mass. Cytological material showed a monomorphic population of cells arranged in cl...

Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide but recent years have seen a rapidly rising proportion of cases of advanced non-small cell carcinoma amenable to increasingly targeted therapy, initially based on the differential response to systemic treatment of tumours of squamous or glandular differentiation. In two thirds of cases, where patients present with advanced disease, both primary pathological diagnosis and biomarker testing is based on small biopsies and cytopathological...

INTRODUCTION The objective of this study was to assess the diagnostic utility of CD10 in the differential diagnosis of grade 1-endometrial endometrioid carcinoma (G1-EEC) and the metaplastic changes associated with the endometrial glandular and stromal breakdown (EGBD) on liquid-based cytological (LBC) samples. METHODS (1) The type and distribution of CD10-positive cells in EGBD and G1-EEC patients were evaluated. (2) Based on the results from (1), histological and cytological specimens were dou...

Tumours developing after a protracted period of time in burn scars are a notable complication with carcinomas forming a major share. The occurrence of burn scar sarcomas is scarce with dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) being an uncommon entity having only three prior reported cases. Herein we report a case of a 32-year-old male patient with a 5 year prior history of thermal burn who presented with an expanding painless swelling for 2 years in the right flank region, diagnosed as DFSP on fin...

Bronchioloalveolar lavage (BAL) is a non-invasive and well-tolerated procedure that plays a key role in the diagnosis of a variety of non-neoplastic pulmonary diseases, including acute respiratory failure, infection, diffuse parenchymal lung disease (DLPD), paediatric and occupational lung disease, and in the evaluation of the lung allograft. A variety of analytic techniques are commonly performed on BAL fluid, including cytology, cell differential count, microbiology and virology, as well as a ...

A 43-year-old female was admitted due to acute urinary retention, indwelling urinary catheter, and intermittent bilateral lumbar and lower abdominal pain which began one day prior. Six days prior to admission, she experienced macroscopic hematuria but did not exhibit any symptoms of accompanying pain, incontinence, lumbago, fever, nausea or vomiting. One day ago, she experienced dysuria, and sought emergency care at another hospital.
