The objective of this experiment was to determine if statistical process control (SPC) procedures coupled with remote continuous data collection could accurately differentiate between animals experimentally inoculated with a viral-bacterial (VB) challenge or phosphate buffer solution (PBS). Crossbred heifers (N = 38; BW = 230 ± 16.4 kg) were randomly assigned to treatments by initial weight, ADG, BHV-1 and MH serum titers. Feeding behavior, DMI, animal activity and rumen temperature were continu...

While the raw pet food market continues to grow, the risk of bacterial contamination in these types of diets is a major concern, with Salmonella enterica and Listeria monocytogenes being the most frequently associated pathogens in raw pet food product recalls. DL-methionine is included in some commercial feline kibble and canned diets to improve protein quality; however, an alternative to this is a liquid methionine supplement, 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)-butanoic acid (HMTBa), which is also an org...

To assess efficacy of bis-glycinate bound Zn, 36 crossbred wethers (34 ± 2 kg) were sorted by body weight into three groups and stagger started on a Zn deficient diet (18 mg Zn/kg dry matter; 22.5% neutral detergent fiber) for 45 d prior to a 15-d metabolism period (10 d adaptation, 5 d collection). On d 46, lambs were randomly assigned to dietary treatments (4 lambs treatment-1group -1): no supplemental Zn (CON) or 15 mg supplemental Zn/kg dry matter (ZINC) as Zn sulfate (ZS) or bis-glycinate (...

Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), an NAD-dependent protein deacetylase, plays a central role in the control of lipid metabolism in non-ruminants. However, the role of SIRT1 in hepatic lipid metabolism in dairy cows with fatty liver is not well known. Thus, we used isolated primary bovine hepatocytes to determine the role of SIRT1 in protecting cells against oleic acid (OA)-induced steatosis. Recombinant adenoviruses to overexpress (AD-GFP-SIRT1-E) or knockdown (AD-GFP-SIRT1-N) SIRT1 were used for transduction ...

Visceral organs (VO) are essential for their role in the metabolism and distribution of consumed nutrients as well as other life functions in animals. Two experiments were conducted to assess the natural longitudinal changes that the VO undergo from birth through 150 kg body weight (BW). In Experiment 1, a total of 96 crossbred pigs were euthanized at birth (pre-suckle), d 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 14, 21 (weaning), 22, 23, 24, 26, 28, 42, 49, and 63 of age. In Experiment 2, a total of 48 crossbred pigs we...

A N-balance experiment was conducted to test the hypothesis that D-Methionine (D-Met) has the same bioavailability and efficacy as L-Methionine (L-Met) when fed to weanling pigs. A Met-deficient basal diet containing 0.24% standardized ileal digestible (SID) Met was formulated. Six additional diets were formulated by adding 0.036, 0.072, or 0.108% D-Met or L-Met to the basal diet, and these diets, therefore, contained 77, 87, or 97% of the requirement for SID Met. Fifty-six barrows (10.53 ± 1.17...

This study aimed to investigate the impact of dietary fiber (DF) sources on sow and litter performance, and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of gross energy (GE) and nutrients. A total of 48 sows were stratified for body weight at mating and randomly assigned to 1 of 4 DF sources [mixed fiber (MF), palm kernel expellers (PKE), sugar beet pulp (SBP) or soy hulls (SH)] and fed the diet from mating until farrowing. Within DF treatments, sows were supplemented with 1 of 2 extra energy sourc...

Studies show that retrieval practices such as homework assignments that are completed during the encoding phase of learning benefit knowledge acquisition and retention. In addition, desirable difficulties, which are strategies that intentionally create a greater challenge during initial learning to enhance encoding and retrieval pathways, also benefit learning long term. Our objective was to determine whether weekly homework questions intended to create desirable difficulties by requiring higher...

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of grading levels of deoxynivalenol (DON) in the diet of weaned pigs, as well as the effects of a supplementation with antioxidants (AOX), hydrated sodium calcium aluminosilicates (HSCAS) and their combination on the growth, antioxidant status, immune and vaccine response against the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2). At weaning, 336 piglets were allocated to six dietary treatments according to a ra...
