Current data demonstrated that severe cases of coronavirus-disease-19 (COVID-19) require treatment with antiviral therapy, dexamethasone, supportive care, as well as some anti-rheumatic drugs, among them, cytokine inhibitors and colchicine. Colchicine is an anti-inflammatory drug that is being used in rheumatology for many years to treat mostly gout, calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, and Familial Mediterranean Fever. Here, we present for the first time, two patients suffering from gout b...

To estimate the level of medication adherence and barriers to adherence among systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. Patients taking antimalarials, immunosuppressives, and/or steroids to treat SLE were included. Adherence was measured using the Medication Adherence Self Report Inventory (MASRI) and adherence rates < 80% were considered nonadherent while rates ≥ 80% sufficiently adherent. Pill counts were conducted in a proportion of participants. Barriers to adherence were identified using...
The authors present the case of a 76-year-old female patient with progressive decrease in proximal muscle strength, fatigue, dyspnea, diffuse hand edema and painful triphasic Raynaud's phenomenon. Anti-SRP and anti-SSA antibodies were detected, muscle biopsy revealed changes consistent with necrotizing myopathy and capillaroscopy had findings compatible with systemic sclerosis. High-resolution chest computed tomography revealed interstitial lung disease with a non-specific interstitial pneumonia...

OBJECTIVE We investigated the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in all or nonobese patients with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) and compared it with age- and gender-matched controls. Also, we assessed the effect of variables at diagnosis on the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in all or nonobese AAV patients. METHODS In this study, 173 AAV patients and 344 controls were included and MetS was defined by the National Cholesterol Education Program A...

Anti-U1RNP antibody is associated with distinct organ involvement in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Nailfold capillaroscopy (NFC) allows non-invasive assessment of microvascular abnormalities in several connective tissue diseases. The objective of this study is to determine the association of anti-U1RNP antibody with microvascular changes by NFC in RNP-positive SLE patients in comparison with RNP-negative SLE patients (negative disease controls) and mixed connective tissue dis...

To identify environmental factors (EF) in a large cohort of patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) analyzing their clinical and laboratory presentation. A cohort of consecutive patients attended at a single Brazilian SSc outpatient clinic was analyzed regarding EF. Data were analyzed according to clinical, demographic and laboratory characteristics, as well as SSc subtype. In a cohort of 662 patients, 70 (10.6%) had known previous exposure to EF, predominantly organic solvents (51.4%), silica (2...

Objective methods are needed to quantify digital artery disease in systemic sclerosis (SSc) for clinical trials of vascular therapies. Our primary aim was to examine feasibility of a novel tomographic three-dimensional-(3-D) ultrasound (tUS) with high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) or ultra-high-frequency ultrasound (UHFUS) to assess the digital arteries in patients with SSc compared to healthy controls. A secondary objective was to compare the total wall volume (TWV) as a measure of intimal/medial...

Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies-associated vasculitis (AAV) occurs in elderly people, and patients with anti-myeloperoxidase autoantibodies (MPO-ANCA)-positive AAV are often complicated with interstitial lung disease (ILD). This study aimed to evaluate the age-related clinical features of elderly patients with MPO-ANCA-positive AAV-ILD. This study retrospectively investigated 63 patients with MPO-ANCA-positive AAV-ILD, all of whom were 65 years or older at diagnosis. Clinical characterist...

To assess, by means of a questionnaire, the effectiveness of a therapeutic education session on rheumatoid arthritis patients' knowledge about methotrexate. Retrospective study of data collected in routine care. STROBE guidelines were used. Rheumatoid arthritis patients treated with methotrexate had a therapeutic education session conducted by a rheumatology nurse at time 0 and 6 months after. They completed a questionnaire to assess their knowledge about methotrexate before the first therapeuti...

To study the demographic, clinical and serologic characteristics of anti-MDA5-positive DM from two geographically and ethnically disparate inception cohorts in India. To identify the clinical and serological parameters at inception that could predict mortality among these individuals. Individuals with anti-MDA5 antibody-positive DM diagnosed between 2017 and 2020 from two centres in India were prospectively followed up. The clinical and serological characteristics at baseline and the treatment o...
