Abstract In this study, we examined the potential use of N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) in association with a polyvalent antivenom and as stand-alone therapy to reduce the acute local and systemic effects induced by Lachesis muta muta venom in rats. Male Wistar rats (300–350 g) were exposed to L. m. muta venom (1.5 mg/kg – i.m.) and subsequently treated with anti-Bothrops/Lachesis serum (antivenom:venom ratio 1:3 ‘v/w’ – i.p.) and NAC (150 mg/kg – i.p.) separately or in association; the animals were ...

Mushroom poisoning is a common clinical problem. Severe mushroom poisoning often causes liver and kidney failure. Although severe myocardial damage is rare, the fatality rate is extremely high. This case report describes a 56-year-old male suffered severe myocardial damage, multiple organ dysfunction, circulatory failure, recurrent malignant arrhythmia, and cardiac arrest after the ingestion of wild mushrooms. He was administered venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) combine...

Abstract Snakebite is an important public health problem in tropical and subtropical regions. Macrovipera lebetina is one of the most dangerous snakes in Iran. Envenoming by this snake can lead to respiratory distress, heart attack, bleeding, and death. The specific treatment available is immunized equine serum, which has several side effects like serum sickness. Nowadays, single-chain fragment variable antibodies (scFvs) are one of the fast growing classes of monoclonal antibodies, which are su...

Abstract The present report describes the clinical and pathological changes induced by the consumption of oats contaminated with Crotalaria spectabilis seeds by horses. Eighty horses were exposed to oats containing 10 g/kg of C. spectabilis seeds with 0.46% pyrrolizidine alkaloids, and 21 horses died within a 6-month period. Clinical signs included jaundice, apathy, a hypotonic tongue, ataxia, hyporexia, weight loss, aimless wandering, violent behavior, and proprioceptive deficits. Pathological ...

Abstract Cyanobacterial blooms present a threat to many waterbodies around the world used for drinking water and recreational purposes. Toxicology tests, such as the Thamnotoxkit-F which uses the cladoceran T. platyurus, have been employed to assess the health hazards that these blooms may pose to the public. However, reported median lethal concentrations (LC50) of microcystin -LR to T. platyurus vary significantly from one study to the next. The variation in solvent type and concentrations used...

Third-degree burn infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria are of high clinical concern. Chemical antibiotics are not promising in eradication of bacterial infections. In this challenging condition, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are recently introduced as novel promising agents to overcome the issue. Accordingly, our study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of 'melittin' as natural peptide in bee venom, in eradicating vancomycin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) on a mouse model of ...

Paralytic shellfish toxin (PST) content in the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum changes with culture age, with a higher toxin concentration in the logarithmic phase that decreases when the culture ages. The gene copy number (GCN) of domains sxtA1 and sxtA4 was higher in the lag and stationary phase, and lag phase, respectively. No relationship was found between the GCN of the domains sxtA4 and sxtA1 with the PST content in G. catenatum.

This review aims to determine the analgesic efficacy of botulinum toxin (BTX) for the management of pain in children with cerebral palsy (CP). During July and August 2020, a systematic literature search was performed using a mixture of subject headings and free text. The eligibility criteria for inclusion in the review were: (1) interventional studies, (2) participants: children aged 0-18 with CP, (3) participants were treated with BTX, (4) an outcome measure of pain or satisfaction with pain ma...

Sanguinarine (SGN) is a benzophenathridine alkaloid extracted from Sanguinaria canadensis plant. SGN is incriminated in epidemic dropsy (ED) characterized by multiple-organ failure and anemia. Nevertheless, how SGN leads to anemia of ED remains poorly understood. This study was thus initiated to investigate the interaction of SGN with human red blood cells (RBCs) and to delineate associated molecular mechanisms. Heparin- and EDTA-anticoagulated blood was collected from healthy participants and w...

Acute kidney injury is one of the main complications of ophidian accidents and the leading cause of death in patients who survive the initial damage effects of venom. The hypothesis proposed in this investigation is that the pharmacological repositioning of doxycycline (doxy) attenuates renal injury provoked by Bothrops jararacussu (Bj) venom. Male Wistar rats were subjected or not (control) to experimental envenomation with Bj venom (3.5 mg/kg, im). Doxy (3 mg/kg, ip) was administered 2 h after...
