Neuromuscular choristoma (NMC) are lesions of the peripheral nervous system characterized by an admixture of skeletal muscle fibers and nerves fascicles that are frequently associated with desmoid fibromatosis (DF). Mutations in CTNNB1, the gene for β-catenin protein, are common in DF and related to its pathogenesis. They are restricted to exon 3, with 3 point mutations: T41A, S45F, and S45P. To understand the pathogenesis of NMC, we tested CTNNB1 status in 5 cases of NMC whether or not they wer...

This study examined the roles of microglia and monocytes in myelin destruction in patients with early multiple sclerosis (MS). Twenty-two cases were studied; the clinical duration was <9 weeks in 10 cases. Twenty myeloid cell subtypes or categories were identified including 2 cell types not known previously to occur in demyelinating diseases. Commencing myelin breakdown in plaques and in perivascular and subpial tissues occurred in the immediate presence of infiltrating monocytes and was effecte...

Saccular intracranial aneurysm (sIA) rupture leads to a disabling subarachnoid hemorrhage. Chronic inflammation and lipid accumulation in the sIA wall contribute to wall degenerative remodeling that precedes its rupture. A better understanding of the pathobiological process is essential for improved future treatment of patients carrying sIAs. Serum amyloid A (SAA) is an acute-phase protein produced in response to acute and chronic inflammation and tissue damage. Here, we studied the presence and...

Spinal cord ischemic injury and paralysis are devastating complications after open surgical repair of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms. Preclinical models have been developed to simulate the clinical paradigm to better understand the neuropathophysiology and develop therapeutic treatment. Neuropathological findings in the preclinical models have not been comprehensively examined before. This systematic review studies the past 40 years of the histological findings after open surgical repair in p...

Resected lesions from the pineal region are rare specimens encountered by surgical pathologists, and their heterogeneity can pose significant diagnostic challenges. Here, we reviewed 221 pineal region lesions resected at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center from 1994 to 2019 and found the most common entities to be pineal parenchymal tumors (25.3%), glial neoplasms (18.6%), and germ cell tumors (17.6%) in this predominantly adult cohort of patients. Six cases ...

The analysis of nuclear morphology plays an important role in glioma diagnosis and grading. We previously described intranuclear rods (rods) labeled with the SDL.3D10 monoclonal antibody against class III beta-tubulin (TUBB3) in human ependymomas. In a cohort of adult diffuse gliomas, we identified nuclear rods in 71.1% of IDH mutant lower-grade gliomas and 13.7% of IDH wild-type glioblastomas (GBMs). The presence of nuclear rods was associated with significantly longer postoperative survival in...
