The renin–angiotensin system is mainly associated with the regulation of blood pressure, but recently many other functions of this system have been described. ACE2, an 805-amino acid monocarboxypeptidase type I transmembrane glycoprotein, was discovered in 2000 and has sequence similarity to two other proteins, namely ACE and collectrin. The ACE2 gene is located on Xp22 and is highly polymorphic. ACE2 is expressed in numerous tissues especially the lung alveolar epithelial cells, heart, kidney a...

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a zoonotic viral infection originating from Wuhan, China in December 2019. The World Health Organization has classified this pandemic as a global health emergency due to its virulent nature of transmission, which may lead to acute respiratory distress syndrome. Singapore’s health ministry has responded with enhanced surveillance of COVID-19 for all suspected pneumonia cases, further increasing the volume of testing via real-time reverse transcription PC...

Unravelling the SARS-CoV-2 mechanism of entry into host cells is engaging the endeavours of researchers worldwide and, although angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is recognised as the primary receptor, many issues remain to be investigated.1 Remarkably, the interaction between ACE2 and the spike (S) glycosylated protein of SARS-CoV-2 necessary for viral entry has been discovered by employing crystallography. S protein presents a receptor binding domain (RBD) and more specifically a receptor ...

Significant challenges exist to develop sensitive and specific tests to diagnose COVID-19 caused by infection with the RNA virus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).1 Diagnosis of COVID-19 in the acute stage relies on detecting SARS-CoV-2 genomic RNA in naso/oropharyngeal (NOP) swabs. The swab is transferred to the laboratory in either viral or universal transport medium (VTM/UTM) and reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) performed to detect SARS-CoV-2 RNA.1 This same algor...

The current COVID-19 pandemic has imposed sweeping changes in every aspect of life, not least in the way pathologists carry out their practice. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 spreads quickly from person to person through respiratory droplets released in the air by infected patients. Thus, respecting strict biosafety procedures while handling potentially infected fresh tissues, liquid samples or even air-dried fixed cytological preparations, has become paramount for pathologists....
