To evaluate time trends in the prevalence of antithrombotic and statin use in four European countries. Using population-based data from the United Kingdom, Denmark, Spain and Italy between 2010 and 2018, we calculated standardized annual prevalence proportions of antithrombotics and statin use, and changes in prevalence proportions (2018 vs. 2010). Prevalence proportion of statins increased from 24.8% to 24.6% (UK), 21.0% to 22.3% (Region of Southern Denmark [RSD]), 12.9% to 14.3% (Udine, Italy)...

AIM Psychotropic medications include many drugs that may be inappropriate for older individuals with cognitive impairment. In Sweden, many people become registered in the Swedish Dementia Registry when they are diagnosed with major neurocognitive disorder (NCD). In this study, we aim to describe psychotropic drug use and associated factors among older Swedish people with major NCD. METHODS This study included 38,251 people ≥ 65 years from the Swedish registry for cognitive/dementia disorders dia...

PURPOSE Because of toxicities, benzodiazepines are not usually recommended in older adults. We therefore sought to describe the trends in benzodiazepine use in long-term care and examine the variation in benzodiazepine use among nursing homes. METHODS In this retrospective repeated cross-sectional analysis of Medicare Parts A, B, and D claims data linked to the Minimum Data Set from 2013 to 2018, we included long-term residents who stayed in a nursing home for at least one entire quarter of a ca...

Adverse drug events are related to negative outcomes in healthcare, including hospitalization, increased duration of hospital stay and death. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review to evaluate hospitalizations and deaths related to adverse drug events worldwide, reported in studies with national coverage. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42020157008). We performed a systematic search on Medline, Embase, CINAHL, LILACS, and the Cochrane Library (until March 2020) usin...

Long-term use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) has been linked to an increased risk of osteoporosis, with various indirect mechanisms so far identified. Although no direct underlying mechanism for effect on bone cells have been investigated with the use of PPIs. Melastatin-like transient receptor potential 7 (TRPM7)channel has been engaged in the proliferation of bone cells. TRPM7 channel is regulated by extracellular Mg2+ and Ca2+ level, that further encourages to analyse if any imbalance with ...

Acid-suppressive drugs (ASDs) are being used by increasing number of children and young adults. However, evidence for a relationship between ASD use and the risk of fracture in these groups of patients is conflicting. We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the risk of fracture in children and young adults exposed to ASDs. A literature search was performed using the PUBMED, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases from inception to November 2020. Pooled relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence int...

To summarize the evidence of efficacy and safety of the use of ketamine and esketamine for depression. A literature search was performed in Medline, the Cochrane Library, LILACS, and CRD until November 2020. We included systematic reviews with meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials on the use of ketamine and esketamine in adult patients with depression. Two authors independently performed the study selection and data extraction. The AMSTAR-2 tool was used to appraise the quality of includ...

Introduction null Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 inhibitors (PCSK9i) are monoclonal antibodies that lower lipid levels. Although several cardiovascular outcome trials reported the effectiveness of PCSK9i, the evidence on cost-effectiveness is mixed. We systematically reviewed the evidence and synthesized incremental net benefit (INB) to quantify pooled cost-effectiveness. null Methods null We systematically searched for full economic evaluation studies reporting outcomes of PCSK9i comp...

Objective null To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effects of antidepressant drug therapy (with or without physical exercise) on peripheral inflammatory markers in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). null Methods null MEDLINE, PyscINFO, Embase, and Google Scholar databases were searched until May 2020. Randomized trials that measured at least one inflammatory biomarker and included adult outpatients with MDD under antidepressant drug therapy (any drug) with or with...
