Abstract null null Highly porous Fe-doped carbonate hydroxyapatite spheres (Fe-CHAs) were synthesized by two-step hydrothermal method and characterized by SEM, XRD and FTIR. The synthesized Fe-CHAs were confirmed as B-type substituted CHAs. Fe-CHAs with desirable hierarchical mesoporous structure exhibited BET surface area of 93.8 m2/g, pore diameter of 37.4 nm, and pore volume of 0.523 cm3/g. Carmine dye was chosen as model organic dye to investigate the adsorption properties of Fe-CHAs. The ma...

Abstract null null This work investigates the influence of loading type, loading rate, and test size on the fracture energy of columnar freshwater S2 ice. The ice sheet in the Ice tank at Aalto University was very warm (above -0.5 null null null null null ∘ null null null C) and thick ( null null null 0.34 null null null h null null null 0.41 null null null null m). A program of nineteen mode I fracture tests using deeply cracked edge-cracked rectangular plates of various sizes (size range 1:39)...

Abstract null null Collagen's unique properties are ideal for creating tissue and organ equivalents. Rapid development of methods for creating such objects has revealed that collagen biomaterials have poor mechanical properties, which complicates their use. A potential solution is increasing the collagen concentration in the initial solution; however, there is little data on the behavior of cells cultured inside concentrated collagen hydrogels for an extended period. Therefore, we assessed the c...

Abstract null null In this work we analyze the oxidation of 30 nm polycrystalline transition metals films (Hf, Ta, Mo and Ru) at low temperatures (298 K to 473 K) upon the exposure to two different species: molecular oxygen and atomic oxygen. Using in-situ spectroscopic ellipsometry and in-vacuum X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we verify the oxide growth kinetics and the final stoichiometry after each exposure condition for the four metals, and explore the particularities present in each oxide...

Abstract null null In this study, a new Nb30Mo30Hf20Co20 (at. %) refractory high entropy alloy (RHEA) comprising an intermetallic (Hf, Co)-rich B2 matrix and disordered (Nb, Mo)-rich bcc particles was introduced. The B2 matrix showed relatively high dislocation mobility, which, coupled with its continuity, allowed bridging and blunting of the cracks formed in the hard bcc particles during plastic deformation. The complex deformation behavior of the constitutive phases resulted in extraordinary h...

Аbstract null null As-cast Ti-Nb-Mo alloys of 4 compositions with commensurate contents of Nb and Ti were obtained by arc-melting and tested for oxidation resistance at 700 °C. For an alloy with a high Mo content, weight loss was observed due to the evaporation of MoO3. In alloys enriched in Nb and Ti, a constant increase in mass was found, caused by the formation of an oxide layer. SEM studies of microstructure and electron probe micro analysis of obtained oxides were carried out. It was found ...

Abstract null null In this study, different grain growth paths after aging at various temperatures for 1 hour were observed in Ag nanotwinned thin films with and without substrate bias voltage, which led to large differences in thermal stability. As-deposited Ag nanotwinned thin films with and without substrate bias voltage were characterized by FIB, EBSD, and TEM, which revealed thinner equiaxial fine-grained regions, higher amounts of (111)-oriented grains and denser nanotwin stacking perpendi...

Abstract null null This study aims to present an overview of the progress of geopolymer composites with regards to the latest developments on its constituents (binders, activators, and aggregates) and manufacturing techniques. Some ecological, economic, and industrial limitations of the traditional aluminosilicate binders yield to the pursuit of alternative ones over the period. Some of these latest binders e.g. ferrochrome ash, mine tailings, rice husk ash, red mud, have been highlighted in thi...

Abstract null null The near-surface properties of maraging steels are key to controlling their mechanical properties. They can be tailored by surface treatments such as shot peening and can also be influenced by prior machining. This study aims at determining the respective roles of grinding and shot peening processes on the near-surface microstructure of Custom 465 maraging stainless steel. A combination of experimental techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron micros...
