The grain boundary (GB) excess volume is an important structural factor that is strongly correlated with various thermodynamic and kinetic properties of GBs such as GB energy, GB mobility, GB diffusivity, and GB segregation energy, etc. However, the excess volume is usually reported as an average value of the entire GB. Such simplification does not consider the spectral nature of the excess volume in a GB, which cannot be used to describe the atomic mechanisms of some kinetic process, such as GB...

Dense (Hf, Ta, Nb, Ti, V)C- and (Ta, Nb, Ti, V, W)C-based high-entropy carbides (HEC) were produced by three different sintering techniques: gas pressure sintering/sinter–HIP at 1900 °C and 100 bar Ar, vacuum sintering at 2250 °C and 0.001 bar as well as SPS/FAST at 2000 °C and 60 MPa pressure. The relative density varied from 97.9 to 100%, with SPS producing 100% dense samples with both compositions. Grain size measurements showed that the substitution of Hf with W leads to an increase in the m...

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence and wearable devices, flexible magnetic sensors have attracted much attention in recent years. In this work, large self-biased 0–3 type poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene)/cobalt ferrite (P(VDF-TrFE)/CoFe2O4) flexible magnetoelectric (ME) composite films are proposed for the development of AC magnetic sensors. P(VDF-TrFE)/CoFe2O4 composite films with CoFe2O4 nanoparticle mass contents from 5 to 30% are successfully fabricated through ...

Flexible polyurethane foam (FPUF) has many advantages such as lightweight, low density and high specific strength and is widely used in furniture, automobile industry, construction and transportation. However, FPUF is extremely flammable in the air, and a large amount of toxic gas will be generated when it is burned. The fire protection technology of FPUF has attracted more and more attention. Generally, it is an effective method to improve fire protection of FPUF by introducing additive flame r...

As the development of dual-ion batteries (DIBs) is limited by the capacity of anions intercalation, we put forward an innovative design idea of DIB. Compared with the traditional graphite cathodes, few-layered reduced graphene oxide (rGO) has a large specific surface area and can greatly improve the utilization ratio of carbon layers for fast redox reaction process. In addition, the carbon paper current collector with porous network structure facilitates the uniform distribution of active materi...

Tungsten disulfide polycrystalline microfibers were successfully synthesized by a process involving electrospinning, calcination, and sulfidation steps. We used an aqueous solution of silicotungstic acid (H4SiW12O40) and polyvinyl alcohol as precursors for the synthesis of composite fibers by the needle-less electrospinning technique. The obtained green composite fibers (av. diam. 460 nm) were converted by calcination in air to tungsten oxide WO3 fibers with traces of SiO2 and a smaller diameter...

Separation of dyes and antibiotics is particularly important in wastewater treatment. In this work, the hydrophilic modified polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes were prepared by deposition of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), tannic acid (TA) and ferric chloride (FeCl3). The surface morphology of the modified membranes was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In addition, the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XP...

In this study, graphene oxide–cerium oxide (GO–CeO2) hybrids were synthesized through an in situ hydrothermal approach and were incorporated into epoxy resin to prepare a robust coating for aluminum alloy protection. The mechanical properties of the GO–CeO2-loaded coating were characterized by nano-indentation, friction-wear test and pull-off adhesion test, using pristine epoxy coating and GO-loaded epoxy coating for comparison. Results revealed that GO–CeO2 addition could increase the hardness,...

Porous nanomaterials have broad application aspects in energy storage and conversion. In this paper, the energy storage characteristics of two kinds of Metal-organic Frameworks (MOFs) nanofluids were studied through experiments and molecular simulation (MS). Firstly, UIO-67/water and UIO-67/methanol nanofluids were prepared, the structural characteristics of UIO-67 were studied, and the results showed that the Metal-organic Frameworks of UIO-67 is stable under 770 K. Then, the energy storage cap...

The small punch test (SPT) was developed for situations where source material is scarce, costly or otherwise difficult to acquire, and has been used for assessing components with variable, location-dependent material properties. Although lacking standardization, the SPT has been employed to assess material properties and verified using traditional testing. Several methods exist for equating SPT results with traditional stress–strain data. There are, however, areas of weakness, such as fracture a...
