The present article investigates the chemical composition of volatiles of essential oil (EO) and headspace (HS) fraction, as well as biological activities of EO obtained from needles with twigs of Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii cultivated in Serbia. The major class of compounds was monoterpene hydrocarbons with α-terpinolene, sabinene and β-pinene (EO), and sabinene, α-terpinolene and β-pinene (HS) as the dominant volatiles. Tested EO exhibited mostly low antimicrobial potential against in...

Pancreatic tumors are hypovascular, which leads to a poor nutrient supply to support the aggressively proliferating tumor cells. However, human pancreatic cancer cells have extreme resistance to nutrition starvation, which enables them to survive under severe metabolic stress conditions within the tumor microenvironment, a phenomenon known as "austerity" in cancer biology. Discovering agents which can preferentially inhibit the cancer cells' ability to tolerate starvation conditions represent a ...

The objective of the present study was to investigate the variations in some major primary (sugars and organic acids) and secondary (phenolics, β-carotene) metabolite contents during fruit development and ripening in two important apricot cultivars (Hacihaliloglu and Kabaasi). The changes in the compositional properties of two apricot cultivars were monitored during fruit development with one-week intervals from 56 to 119 days after blossom. During fruit development, the contents of organic acid...

A new 3,4-difluorobenzylidene analog of curcumin, CDF, was recently reported, which demonstrated significantly enhanced bioavailability and in vivo anticancer activity compared with curcumin. For highlighting the antiparasitic behavior of CDF, we tested this compound together with its new O-methylated analog MeCDF against Leishmania major and Toxoplasma gondii parasites. Both CDF and MeCDF were tested in vitro against L. major and T. gondii. In addition, the in vitro cytotoxicity against Vero ce...

Betulinic acid, which is found in transgenic roots of Senna obtusifolia (L.) H.S.Irwin & Barneby, is a pentacyclic triterpene with distinctive pharmacological activities. In this study, we report the differences in the content of betulinic acid and selected anthraquinones in transgenic S. obtusifolia hairy roots with overexpression of the PgSS1 gene (SOPSS2 line) and in transformed hairy roots without this genetic construct (SOA41 line). Both hairy root lines grew in 10 L sprinkle bioreactor. Ad...

Ten new cassane-type diterpenoids were isolated from the seeds of Caesalpinia bonduc (L.) Roxb., including 6α-hydroxycaesalpinin P (1), 14-epi-caesalpinin E1 (2), 6-deacetylcaesalmin Z (3), 14-epi-caesalmin Z (4), caesalpinolides I (5), K (6), L (7), M (9) and N (10), and 14-epi-neocaesalpin L (8). Their planar structures and absolute configurations were fully determined by comprehensive spectroscopic methods, including 2D NMR and electronic circular dichroism spectra. Compounds 1-4 are tetracyc...
The characteristics of acidic polysaccharides extracted from Daucus carota L. var. sativa Hoffm were investigated and its hepatoprotective effects on alcoholic liver injury were determined in the mice model. A carrot polysaccharide (CPS-I: Carrot polysaccharide-I) with the molecular weight of 3.40×104 kDa was isolated from Daucus carota L. and purified by diethylaminoethyl-52 and Sephadex G-150 column chromatography. The components were analyzed by HPLC, which revealed that CPS-I consisted of ga...

Herein we report an assessment of 24 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline derivatives for potential DNase I (deoxyribonuclease I) inhibitory properties in vitro. Four of them inhibited DNase I with IC50 values below 200 μM. The most potent was 1-(6,7-dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolin-1-yl)propan-2-one (2) (IC50 =134.35±11.38 μM) exhibiting slightly better IC50 value compared to three other active compounds, 2-[2-(4-fluorophenyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolin-1-yl]-1-phenylethan-1-one (15) (IC50 ...

Three new monoterpenoids, named eucomylides A - C ( 1 - 3 ), along with six known compounds ( 4 - 9 ) were isolated from the staminate flowers of Eucommia ulmoides Oliver. The structures were elucidated by extensive analyses of spectroscopics methods, and their absolute configurations were established by time-dependent density functional theory electronic circular dichroism (TDDFT ECD) calculation. All the compounds along with previously isolated components ( 10 - 14 ) were tested for their anti...

A series of pyrimidine-containing 4H-chromen-4-one derivatives were designed and synthesized by combining bioactive substructures. Preliminary biological activity results showed that most of the compounds displayed significant inhibitory activities in vitro against Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. Citri ( X. axonopodis), Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (X. oryzae) and Ralstonia solanacearum (R. solanacearum). In particular, compound 2-((3-((5,7-dimethoxy-4-oxo-2-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)-4H-chromen-3-yl)...
