To accomplish reliable pedestrian detection using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) under night-time conditions, an image enhancement method is developed in this article to improve the low-illumination image quality. First, the image brightness is mapped to a desirable level by a hyperbolic tangent curve. Second, the block-matching and 3-D filtering methods are developed for an unsharp filter in YCbCr color space for image denoising and sharpening. Finally, pedestrian detection is performed using ...

Future industrial cyber-physical system (CPS) devices are expected to request a large amount of delay-sensitive services that need to be processed at the edge of a network. Due to limited resources, service placement at the edge of the cloud has attracted significant attention. Although there are many methods of design schemes, the service placement problem in industrial CPS has not been well studied. Furthermore, none of existing schemes can optimize service placement, workload scheduling, and ...

In this article, suffering from unmatched visual-servo uncertainties and unknown dynamics/disturbances, an extreme learning-based monocular visual-servo (ELMVS) scheme is developed for maneuvering an unmanned surface vessel (USV) to reach the desired pose. By virtue of the backstepping philosophy, complex visual-servo unknowns are elaborately encapsulated into lumped nonlinearities, which are further accurately accommodated by devising a single-hidden layer feedforward network based adaptive com...

Uncertain transmission delays, sampling periods, parameters uncertainties regarding the power system, load fluctuations, and the intermittent generation of renewable energy sources (RESs) will significantly influence a power system's frequency. This article designs a robust delay-dependent PI-based load frequency control (LFC) scheme for a power system based on sampled-data control. First, a sampled-data-based delay-dependent LFC model of power system is constructed. Then, by applying the Lyapun...

Fifth generation and beyond networks are envisioned to support multi industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications with a diverse quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. Network slicing is recognized as a flagship technology that enables IIoT networks with multiservices and resource requirements by allowing the network-as-infrastructure transition to the network-as-service. Motivated by the increasing IIoT computational capacity, and taking into consideration the QoS satisfaction and private ...

Many industrial-Internet-of-Things applications require autonomous operation and incorporate devices in inaccessible locations. Recent advances in wireless power transfer (WPT) and autonomous vehicle technologies, in combination, have the potential to solve a number of residual problems concerning the maintenance of, and data collection from embedded devices. Equipping inexpensive unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and embedded devices with subsystems to facilitate WPT allows a UAV to become a viabl...

Intelligent anomaly detection for key performance indicators (KPIs) is important for keeping services reliable in industrial-based cyber–physical systems (CPS). However, it is common in practice for various KPI sampling strategies to be utilized. We experimentally verify that anomaly detection is highly sensitive to irregular sampling, and accordingly go on to investigate low-cost anomaly detection for large-scale irregular KPIs. Irregular KPIs can be classified into four types: equal interval a...

The distribution networks can convincingly break down into small-scale self-controllable areas, namely microgrids (μG), to substitute μGs arrangements for effectively coping with perturbations. This flexible structure not only could potentially possess the strength to recover quickly, but also ensures the supply of vital loads and preserves functionalities under any contingency. To achieve these targets, this article examines a novel spatiotemporal algorithm to split the existing network into a ...

Due to the asymmetry of the actual back electromotive force (back EMF), the performance of the conventional commutation deviation correction method degrades in sensorless control of the brushless direct current (BLDC) motor. This article proposes a high-precision sensorless optimal commutation deviation correction strategy, which considers the asymmetry problems of the back EMF. First, this article discusses the optimal commutation issues and the internal power factor angle based commutation dev...

The significant advancement on data-driven fault detection has been made, but incipient faults such as faults 3, 9 and 15 in Tennessee Eastern process (TEP) still remain difficult for the current approaches. In this paper, a powerful PCA-based ensemble detector (PCAED) is developed for detecting incipient faults. To begin with, multiple PCA-based detectors are designed based on bootstrap sampling in training dataset. It can generate two matrices according to principal component and residual subs...
