Abstract null null The research presents a new analytical grid generation methodology for computational fluid dynamics studies in positive displacement sliding vane rotary machines based on the user defined nodal displacement approach. This method is more inclusive than state of the art ones since it enables the investigation of a broader range of design configurations, such as single, double and multiple-acting vane machines with non-circular housing, slanted blade and asymmetric blade tip prof...
Abstract null null Reference architectures for Big Data, machine learning and stream processing include not only recommended practices and interconnected building blocks but considerations for scalability, availability, manageability, and security as well. However, the automated deployment of multi-VM platforms on various clouds leveraging on such reference architectures may raise several issues. The paper focuses particularly on the widespread Apache Spark Big Data platform as the baseline and ...

Abstract A simple, lightweight, and flexible, package in the programming language Julia for managing finite element mesh data structures is presented. The key role in the design of the data structures is granted to the incidence relation. This concept has some interesting implications for the simplicity and efficiency of the implementation. The entire library has less than 500 executable lines. The low memory requirements are also notable. The design of the data structures is not fixed a priori....

Abstract Locating a critical slip surface or calculating the minimum safety factor of a slope is important in geotechnical engineering, and also involves a complex optimization problem. A novel mathematical model considering linear and nonlinear failure criteria is developed to locate the critical slip surface. And an improved whale optimization algorithm (IWOA), which employs a nonlinear adjustment parameter and Gaussian perturbation operator in whale optimization algorithm (WOA), is proposed t...

Abstract An efficient framework is proposed for reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) of structural systems. The RBDO problem is expressed in terms of the minimization of the failure probability with respect to design variables which correspond to distribution parameters of random variables, e.g. mean or standard deviation. Generally, this problem is quite demanding from a computational viewpoint, as repeated reliability analyses are involved. Hence, in this contribution, an efficient fra...

Abstract In this paper we focus on the fast communication issues of the Big Data processing tasks shared between High Performance Computing systems. In our performance evaluation framework we designed and developed two traffic measurement tools in order to answer some theoretical questions related to congestion control in practice. The first one is based on iperf and tcpdump softwares to capture data flows of TCP and UDP sessions. Classification aspects of the measurement cases were: homogeneity...
Abstract This work presents a parallel implementation of density-based topology optimization using distributed GPU computing systems. The use of multiple GPU devices allows us accelerating the computing process and increasing the device memory available for GPU computing. This increment of device memory enables us to address large models that commonly do not fit into one GPU device. The most modern scientific computers incorporate these devices to design energy-efficient, low-cost, and high-comp...
This article explores various aspects of medical humanism through the figure of French polymath Symphorien Champier. A passeur of knowledge between the ancients and the moderns, as well as between Italy and France, Champier developed as a scholar in the wake of the unearthing of ancient medical works, notably Galen’s. This article reveals the interplay between Champier’s intellectual trajectory and the redicovery of Galen’s thought.
This article examines the editions of Galen’s De ossibus ad tirones (On Bones for Beginners) in Latin, Greek, and French printed in the sixteenth century – a period that saw more than two-dozen printings of the book. After a brief survey of the contents of the book, a description of the various editions and translations produced is given. The illustrations included in the editions up through the middle of the century are then described, and finally the role the book played in a dispute between A...
