The predictive role of noninvasive liver fibrosis scores on liver-related mortality in patients with chronic hepatitis B below 40 years of age remains unclarified. We examined the association of liver fibrosis scores with liver-related mortality in young (<40 years) and older adults with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. A cohort study was performed in 21,360 HBsAg-positive Korean adults without liver cirrhosis or liver cancer at baseline who were followed up for up to 18 years. The liver fibro...

Updated incidence data of acute Delta virus hepatitis (HDV) are lacking worldwide. Our aim was to evaluate incidence of and risk factors for acute HDV in Italy after the introduction of the compulsory vaccination against hepatitis B virus (HBV) in 1991. Data were obtained from the National Surveillance System of acute viral hepatitis (SEIEVA). Independent predictors of HDV were assessed by logistic-regression analysis. The incidence of acute HDV per 1-million population declined from 3.2 cases i...
In 2016, an eConsult service was developed within a safety net health system to expand access to hepatitis C (HCV) treatment in the primary care setting. The eConsult system provides individualized treatment recommendations from specially trained primary care pharmacists and primary care physicians to primary care providers with less experience in the rapidly changing treatment of HCV. Since its launch, this service has had a large impact in expanding care to a largely homeless and low-income ur...

The epidemiology of HDV infection worldwide is obscure. Mapping the epidemiology of the infection is highly required, so, we aimed to estimate the prevalence of hepatitis D virus infection among chronic hepatitis B patients and the epidemiological characteristics in the Nile delta in Egypt. This was a prospective observational cross-sectional study including consecutive chronic hepatitis B patients in the out-patient clinics at the Egyptian Liver Research Institute and Hospital (ELRIAH) and its ...

Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection affects >10% of the general population and is the leading cause of liver cirrhosis and cancer in West Africa. Despite current recommendations, HBV is often not tested for in clinical routine in the region. We included all people living with HIV (PLWH) in care between March and July 2019 at Fann University Hospital in Dakar (Senegal) and proposed hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) test to those never tested. All HBsAg-positive underwent HIV and HBV viral...

Background and aims null The SARS-Cov2 pandemic led to reorganize the clinical activities in Italy, reducing the available resources to manage other diseases. In particular, important milestones achieved towards HCV elimination are now at risk of being nullified. Moreover, the burden of SARS-Cov2 asymptomatic carriers remains still an unresolved issue. To associate those two screenings, in order to respond to these clinical needs seems of actual interest. null Methods null A prospective cohort st...

We read the article by Harney and colleagues with interest1 . Harney presents a model of nurse-led hepatitis C treatment, within a co-located mental health and drug and alcohol service, at which nurse or general practitioners (GP) prescribe direct acting antivirals (DAAs). The study found that integration of hepatitis C care into a service supporting people with severe mental illness achieved high rates of treatment uptake, and cure1 .

The long-term changes of liver stiffness (LS) in patients who achieve viral clearance after direct-acting anti-HCV therapy remain undefined. We conducted a multicenter prospective study to investigate this aspect. Patients with HCV infection treated with DAAs were enrolled from six Italian centers; they underwent clinical, biochemical, ultrasound, and transient elastography evaluations before treatment (T0), 12 weeks (SVR12), and 24 months (T24) after the end of therapy. Among the 516 consecutiv...

Many people with chronic hepatitis C infection don't engage in treatment. To eliminate hepatitis C and avoid health inequalities therapy must be provided to everyone. In other diseases peers with lived experience of the condition have improved care but, for hepatitis C, studies have not shown unequivocal benefit. We completed a retrospective analysis of the English National Health Service treatment registry comparing treatment networks with and without peers using Bayesian Poisson (for count out...
