Abstract Objectives Conduction disturbances requiring permanent pacemaker (PPM) implantation after cardiac surgery occur in 1-5% of patients. Previous studies reported late PPM dependency to be low, but there is lacking evidence that it might be related to implantation timing. In this study we sought to determine whether PPM implantation timing and specific conduction disturbances as indications for PPM implantation are associated with late pacemaker dependency and recovery of atrio-ventricular ...

Abstract Objectives Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common after cardiac surgery. We quantified the mortality and costs of varying degrees of AKI using a population-based cohort in Alberta, Canada. Methods A cohort of patients undergoing cardiac surgery from 2004-2009 was assembled from linked Alberta administrative databases. AKI was classified by KDIGO stages of severity. Our outcomes were in-hospital mortality, length of stay, and costs; among survivors, we also examined mortality and costs at 3...

Abstract Objectives To report outcomes in a pilot study of autologous mitochondrial transplantation (MT) in pediatric patients requiring postcardiotomy extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for severe refractory cardiogenic shock after ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). Methods A single-center retrospective study of patients requiring ECMO for postcardiotomy cardiogenic shock following IRI between May 2002 and December 2018 was performed. Postcardiotomy IRI was defined as coronary artery co...

Abstract Objective Esophagectomy has high rates of morbidity and mortality. Anastomotic leakage is the most frequent complication and is likely caused by diminished anastomotic perfusion. “Supercharged” microvascular anastomosis has previously been performed in select patients to supplement the blood supply to the graft and anastomosis, after esophagectomy. This study aimed to evaluate complications that may arise after performing the supercharged cervical anastomosis for esophagectomy procedure...
