An effective method based on laser etching and driving layer strategy was proposed to prepare patterned Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO)/glass substrate and thus to enhance the photoelectric properties. This method successively included depositing an aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) driving layer, laser etching, depositing an Ag layer, furnace annealing and laser removal. Different AZO and Ag layer thicknesses were adopted, and the surface morphology, crystal structure ...

In order to improve the oxidation and wear resistance of blades tip of titanium alloys as well as the sealing performance of the gas turbine engine, a Ni/cBN abrasive coating was prepared on titanium alloys through composite electroplating. Oxidation, mechanical and tribological properties of the abrasive coating were investigated. Furthermore, the effect of the oxidation on the mechanical and tribological properties was also evaluated. Oxidation results revealed that the abrasive coating underw...

Fatigue crack growth (FCG) behavior of 9Cr/CrMoV dissimilar welded joint at elevated temperature and different stress ratios was investigated. Attention was paid to the region near the fusion line of 9Cr where carbon-enriched zone (CEZ) and carbon-depleted zone (CDZ) formed due to carbon migration during the welding process. Hard and brittle tempered martensite dominated the stress ratio-insensitive FCG behavior in the coarse grain zone (CGZ) of 9Cr-HAZ. For crack near the CGZ–CEZ interface, cra...

Isotropy in microstructure and mechanical properties remains a challenge for laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) processed materials due to the epitaxial growth and rapid cooling in LPBF. In this study, a high-strength TiB2/Al-Cu composite with random texture was successfully fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) using pre-doped TiB2/Al-Cu composite powder. A series of advanced characterisation techniques, including synchrotron X-ray tomography, correlative focussed ion beam–scanning electron ...

In this paper, the diversity of complicated dendrite microstructure and its evolution behavior during solidification in different magnesium alloys under various processing conditions were illustrated using synchrotron X-ray imaging technique. A variety of dendritic morphologies and branching structures were revealed, i.e., sixfold plate-like symmetric structure in Mg–Al-based structure, 12-branch structure in Mg–Zn-based alloys and 18-branch structure in Mg–Sn- and Mg–Ca-based alloys as well as ...

Electron beam additive manufacturing is an effective method for the fabrication of complex metallic components. With rapid solidification, the characteristics of microsegregation within the interdendritic region are interesting and important for the subsequent phase transformation and final mechanical properties. However, in view of the microsecond lifetime and the small length scale of the molten pool, experimentally investigating microsegregation is challenging, even with electron probe micro-...

Here, we compare the porosity, microstructure and mechanical property of 4047 Al–Si alloys prepared by wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) and conventional casting. X-ray microscopy reveals that WAAM causes a higher volume fraction of gas pores in comparison with conventional casting. Effective refinements of α-Al dendrites, eutectic Si particles and Fe-rich intermetallic compounds are achieved by WAAM, resulting from its rapid solidification process. Both ultimate tensile strength (UTS, up t...

The wide application of Mg is hindered by its low corrosion resistance, especially for recycled Mg. In this work, a novel plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process was conducted on a recycled Mg alloy with a high content of Al (~ 2.3 wt%), which results in a polycrystalline PEO coating. The PEO coating displays a three-layered structure with a uniform elemental distribution. Unlike the outer layer decorated by channels of micrometre scales, the middle layer mainly contains submicron-sized pore...

The production of non-weldable nickel-based superalloys, especially single-crystal superalloys, is important for additive manufacturing. Single-crystal specimens of non-weldable nickel-based superalloys were produced by electron beam selective melting using an IN-738 alloy. In this study, single-crystal nickel-based superalloy specimens of different sizes were prepared by a multiple preheating process and tight control of the melting parameters without the need for a grain selector or single-cry...

The AZ31 and AM60 alloys were used for dissimilar friction stir welding (FSW) in this study. The microstructure characteristics of the joint and its three-point bending performance were investigated. The electron backscattered diffraction results showed that the grains in the nugget zone (NZ) were more uniform and refined to a certain extent after FSW, but the grain size of AM60 in the NZ was larger than that of AZ31. The texture was strong locally in the NZ and presented a symmetric distributio...
