N,N'-Disulfonylhydrazines: A novel source of sulfonyl moieties for synthesis of diaryl sulfones

A new synthesis of diaryl sulfones is achieved from N,N'-disulfonylhydrazines and diaryliodonium salts. Its key advantage is that N,N'-disulfonylhydrazines carry out an efficient base-promoted evolution of nitrogen to generate in situ ammonium sulfinates with good solubility and high reactivity.
