The large displacements caused by strong earthquakes in base-isolated structures (buildings, bridges, strategic facilities, equipment, ⋯) can excessively deform or damage the isolation system or lead to pounding with surrounding moat walls or adjacent structures, if the available seismic gap is not sufficient.
