• Two hypotheses was proposed to explain the mechanism of spout deflection. • Virtual experiments were conducted for hypothesis validation. • Spout deflection disappears when particles spur equally at the spout outlet. • Spout deflection disappears when reducing rheological properties of the annulus region.
