Abstract We present a case of a 69-year-old man who had localized pleural metastasis without other organ metastases after nephrectomy for right renal cell carcinoma (RCC). He complained of respiratory symptoms for more than two years after the operation and was confirmed to have right pleural effusion and multiple pleural masses on computed tomography (CT). There were no abnormal findings in the other organs, but the pleural mass gradually increased in size on CT. We suspected malignant tumors such as malignant pleural mesothelioma and synovial sarcoma in addition to RCC metastasis. Finally, we performed surgical resection of the pleural mass under general anesthesia, and we diagnosed pathologically as metastasis from RCC. Distant metastases of RCC are common in the lungs, bones, brain, and liver. To our knowledge, localized pleural metastases from RCC is rare.
Abstract Background The combination of pembrolizumab and axitinib showed antitumor activity in a phase 1b trial involving patients with previously untreated advanced renal-cell carcinoma. Whether p...

Abstract A 91-year-old woman was admitted with persistent pyrexia, anorexia and weight loss. A chest radiograph showed multiple circular masses of various sizes. Chest computed tomography revealed multiple pleural tumors without any lung lesion. The ultrasound-guided biopsy specimens demonstrated diffusely-proliferated tumor cells with clear or vacuolated cytoplasm, which were positive for CD10, PAX8, vimentin and CAM5.2, but were negative for mesothelial cell markers such as HBME-1 and thrombom...

Abstract We herein report the case of a 61-year-old Japanese male with localized pleural metastases of renal cell carcinoma. The patient was admitted to our hospital because of dyspnea on exertion and left-sided pleural effusion. He had undergone right radical nephrectomy 10 years previously. Contrast-enhanced whole-body computed tomography revealed scattered nodular thickening of the left pleura with contrast enhancement and left-sided pleural effusion. Thoracoscopy performed under local anesth...

While renal cell carcinoma frequently metastasizes to the lung, solitary pleural metastasis without lung involvement is extremely rare. A 69-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a solitary pleural metastasis 6 years after surgery for renal cell carcinoma. Needle biopsy was performed, and the tumor was diagnosed as a metastasis of renal cell carcinoma. The pleural tumor was surgically resected. The patient received interferon-α as postoperative therapy. He has been alive for 9 years wit...

Summary Local treatment of metastases such as metastasectomy or radiotherapy remains controversial in the treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma. To investigate the benefits and harms of various local treatments, we did a systematic review of all types of comparative studies on local treatment of metastases from renal cell carcinoma in any organ. Interventions included metastasectomy, radiotherapy modalities, and no local treatment. The results suggest that patients treated with complete m...

A patient with a past history of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) presented to us with an exudative pleural effusion. Because pleural effusion cytology was inconclusive, we performed medical thoracoscopy under local anesthesia. Multiple white tumors measuring approximately 2 cm in diameter were observed on the parietal pleura. Metastatic carcinoma from RCC was diagnosed histologically. Although malignant effusions are rare in cases of RCC metastasis, clinicians should be aware of this possibility. Whe...

Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is a useful, safe diagnostic modality for evaluating mediastinal and hilar lymphadenopathy. We report a 51-year-old male who presented with a left renal mass and multiple pleural masses without lung parenchymal lesions. The pleural masses were thought to be metastatic tumors or malignant mesothelioma. The patient underwent two percutaneous needle biopsies of the pleural mass, but the specimens were insufficient for a hi...

A 71-year-old female was referred with three right-sided intrathoracic tumours. In 2003, she underwent radical left nephrectomy for renal cell cancer (RCC) clinical stage 1. She was since followed at her local hospital with annual computed tomography (CT)-scans during the first five years and did not present any symptoms until October 2009 when she was admitted with shortness of breath, cough and tiredness. The patient was scheduled for a diagnostic thoracoscopy when it was discovered that her l...

The purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the volume doubling time (VDT) and growth rate of renal cell carcinomas (RCC) on a serial computed tomography (CT) scan. Thirty pathologically proven RCCs were reviewed with helical CT. Each tumor underwent at least two CT scans. Tumor volume was determined using an area measuring tool and the summation-of-areas technique. Growth rate was evaluated in terms of diameter and volume changes. VDT and volume growth rate were compared in relati...
