• The Bi 4 O 7 nanosheets were fabricated as an NIR light responsive photocatalyst. • Synergetic effects of Bi 5+ and oxygen vacancies enhanced the NIR light driven photocatalysis. • The photocatalytic mechanism was unveiled based on the experiments and DFT calculations.
