Abstract Background Starch is a major component of our diet. It is also a useful and versatile ingredient in many food and nonfood uses. The main starch sources include maize, potato, cassava, and wheat. The starches from these sources represent the most studied and the most used starches for both industry and academia. Recently, there has been increasing research focusing on underutilized, nonconventional and “novel” starches from many different crops. There has been discussion on why we should...

Abstract The study investigates the use of copy paper in poly (butylene adipate terephthalate)-PBAT and polylactide-PLA composites. The influence of paper volume fraction (21, 30 and 48%) on the void content and the composite properties was analysed by using two different compression moulding methods. An increasing fibre content lead to significantly improved tensile characteristics, while the Charpy impact strength showed a toughness decrease for PBAT and an increase for PLA composites. Additio...

The polyester for bone tissue engineering is produced using different concentrations of hydroxyapatite. Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) solutions containing different concentrations of nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp) (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6% wt) were evaluated to assess their potential to produce scaffolds via electrospinning. The characteristics of these solutions were evaluated using surface tension analysis. Different solutions were electrospun and characterized using scanning electron...

AbstractTwenty crossbred lambs (21.6 ± 3.5 kg BW) were used in a completely randomised design to determine the effects of babassu mesocarp flour (BMF) on performance and ingestive behaviour. The treatments were defined by the increase in concentrations (0, 10, 20 or 30%, in DM basis) of BMF in the diet. When significant treatments effects were found, orthogonal polynomials for treatment responses were determined by linear and quadratic responses (p < .05). To determine the in situ ruminal degrad...

Abstract The growing population, decreasing arable land and fresh water supply questions the sustainability of terrestrial agriculture for securing safe nutrients supply, particularly starch- an essential ingredient for all staple foods. Here, we report the isolation, characterization and offshore production assessment of native starch from green seaweed Ulva ohnoi cultivated in seawater. Starch content varied from 1.59% to 21.44% depending on growth conditions and seasons. Our results show that...

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/polybutylene adipate co-terephthalate (PBAT) blends were prepared by melt blending and compatibilized by glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). The effect of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) on these compatibilized blends were investigated by incorporating GNP at different content. The formulated blend and nanocomposites were characterized for mechanical, morphological, thermal and flammability properties by using universal testing machine, impact tester, field emission scanning electr...

Abstract In this study, biodegradable and edible films based on eggplant flour (EF) and corn starch (CS) were prepared using casting method at proportion of 0–100, 25–75, 50–50, 75–25 and 100–0%, w/w. The mechanical, barrier, physical, and biodegradability properties were evaluated. Tensile strength, elongation at break, Young's modulus, thickness, density and L⁎ parameter of pure starch films were higher than those of other films. Solubility, water vapor permeability (WVP), moisture content and...

Abstract Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biobased product and a compostable aliphatic polyester that has been studied for use in several applications over the last decade. Many properties of PLA, such as strength, stiffness, and gas permeability, have been found to be comparable to those of traditional petrochemical-based polymers. However, PLA-based materials exhibit a number of limitations for specific applications, such as slow biodegradation rate, high cost, and low toughness. The modification of...
