The latest World Health Organization (WHO) classification from 2015 has grouped lung and thymic neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) (named neoplasm in the digestive WHO classification) within one unique group but confirmed their subdivision into four main categories: typical carcinoid (TC), atypical carcinoid (AC), small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC).1 These guidelines are restricted to lung carcinoid (LC) and thymic carcinoid (ThC). Patients with carcinoids are generally younger, have a better prognosis and do not have a strong association with smoking, as compared with SCLC and LCNEC.
